Elected officials are threatened when they must allow people to participate in
making organizational decisions and reluctantly invite them to express themselves
more freely. When a politician's whole life thrust has been to acquire a position of
power and control, he finds it particularly threatening to witness his power eroding
as older Chicago style methods of control and motivation become less effective.
Coupled with the fear of losing control is the fact that many elected officials are
characteristically insensitive to feelings. They pursue high public positions to
obtain power over others as a way of compensating for personal inadequaciues
such as pathological liars. They are neurotically driven. A pathological liar actually
believes his own lies and may change them from telling to telling.
