Man Found Taped Up And Beaten In Garage By Brother: Niles Blotter

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

BURGLARY
Someone set off a burglar alarm at a storage site in the 6100 block of Howard Street around 9 p.m. on Feb .22. Police found a ladder leaning onto an exterior wall of the building and evidence that someone had used a climbing harness and the ladder to get inside the business through an unlocked window. It was not immediately clear if anything was stolen but the cost of repairing damage to the building was estimated to be around $500.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Shortly before 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 23, a customer at the drive-thru Taco Bell in the 7500 block of Harlem Avenue reportedly became upset with an employee asking him to wait, so he pulled around, spat on the front window of the business and allegedly exposed his genitals to the fast food worker through the window.

AGGRAVATED BATTERY
A woman slashed another woman's face with a glass during a bar fight at Here's Cheers in the 8000 block of Oakton Street shortly before 1:10 a.m. on Feb. 24. When police arrived, they found a woman in the bar with a large cut on her face. The suspect fled the scene in a black Chevrolet truck but later turned herself in (see below.)

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone shattered the rear windshield of a car parked in the 8100 block of Overhill Avenue between 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 8:20 a.m. on Feb. 25 with an unknown object in the second such incident of the month.

RETAIL THEFT
A pair of suspects stole various bottles of alcohol worth $323.92 from the Target store in the 6100 block of Touhy Avenue around 4:15 p.m. on Feb. 25.

BURGLARY
Someone stole a wallet from a locker at the X-Sport Fitness in the 9200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue between 1 and 2:50 p.m. on Feb. 26.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 9700 block of Dee Road between 3:45 and 10:10 p.m. on March 2. The burglar ransacked the house but it was not immediately clear how much was stolen.

SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole about $900 worth of vacuums for from the Golf Mill Center Target prior to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 18.

IDENTITY THEFT
Police got a call from a resident in the 9300 block of Washington Street alerting them that a family member had been "seeing" a psychic for a period of time. The psychic had scammed the callers daughter into paying a large sum of money to "life a curse off her family," and at one point the daughter gave the psychic her social security number.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone some various personal items, checks, cash and cards from an unlocked car in the parking lot of the X-Sport Fitness in the 9100 block of Milwaukee Avenue between 6:10 and 7 p.m. on March 7.

DOMESTIC BATTERY
Police were called to the parking lot of the Walmart in the 8500 block of Golf Road at 10:36 p.m. on March 7 for a report that a domestic battery had just taken place. A man had allegedly grabbed his child aggressively by the face. Police were told he had punched the victim in the face with a closed face and choked her, and while officers arrived they learned he had fled the scene on foot around the back of the store.

FLEEING POLICE
A black Honda fled police after a traffic stop in the 7900 block of Oakton Street between 12:45 and 12:59 a.m. on March 8.

THEFT TO VEHICLE
Someone stole all the wheels from two vehicles and left them on concrete blocks between 11 p.m. on Marc 8 and 7 a.m. on March 9. One was parked in the 7000 block of Kedzie Avenue. The other was parked in the 800 block of New England Avenue.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone slashed the tires of a vehicle parked in the 9000 block of Cumberland Avenue between 7 p.m. on March 10 and 10 a.m. on March 11, causing more than $800 in damage.

ATTEMPTED SCAM
A resident in the 8700 block of Merill Street reported that someone had called them from a blocked phone number between 8:45 a.m. and 12:09 p.m. on March 12 and told them their grandson had been arrested and needed money for bail. The resident withdrew $5,000 from the bank but called the grandson first to check if the call was a scam, which it was.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole a laptop, computer, iPad and other items from a car parked in the 9000 block of North Clifton Avenue between 3:30 and 9:56 p.m. on March 12.

UNWANTED SUBJECT
A computer contractor who allegedly had been harassing a resident of the 9800 block of Huber Lane was asked to stay away.

COUNTERFEIT ATTEMPT
A staffer at the Jewel-Osco in the 8700 block of Dempster Street reported at 5:25 p.m. on March 13 that a woman in her late 20s had come in and tried to buy various items with a $100 bill. When the clerk when to verify it, she appeared nervous and fled the scene after the bill was found to be counterfeit.

ORDER OF PROTECTION
A man was too intoxicated to communicate properly when served with an order of protection by his wife with officers standing by in the 8500 block of National Avenue.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2001 Honda that had been parked in the 7700 block of Nordica Avenue, Niles, police were told shortly before 8 a.m. on March 14.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

David T. Stanciel, of the 1500 block of Ridgeway Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 2:51 a.m. on Feb. 22 in the 8700 block of Dempster Street after he was seen stealing $227.37 worth of merchandise from a businesses.

A 25-year-old Northlake man who had recently been fired from the Target store in the 6100 block of Touhy Avenue was issued a citation for disorderly conduct on the afternoon of Feb. 22 for allegedly walking around the store causing a disturbance after he lost his job. He was told not to return.

Ana M. Carrasco, 36, of the 1400 block of Good Avenue, Park Ridge, was arrested at 9 a.m. on Feb. 24 at the Niles Police Department after she was interviewed regarding an incident the prior week at a day care school at which she allegedly caused a disturbance.

Candice D. Beoer, 29, of the 2200 block of California Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 8:12 p.m. on Feb. 24 and charged with retail theft after she was allegedly seen only ringing up some of the items she took from a Target store in the 6100 block of Touhy Avenue while going through the self-checkout line.

Daniel P. Kowalyk, 23, of the 1000 block of North Clifton Avenue, Park Ridge, was arrested at 3:37 a.m. on Feb. 25 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was pulled over in the 7500 block of Oakton Street on account of unlawfully tinted windows and bumper height.

Ebony C. Francellno, 24, of the 2000 block of Emerson Avenue, Evanston, was arrested at 9 a.m. on March 2 and charged with theft after she was seen on video surveillance footage carrying out $474.26 worth of false returns while working as a cashier at the Walmart in the 5600 block of Touhy.

Lakesha S. Stone, 38, of the 6300 block of South Talman Street, Chicago, was arrested shortly before 10 a.m. on March 2 and charged with theft after she was also seen on security footage committing fraudulent returns while working as a Walmart cashier. The total loss of the fraudulent returns of $1,146.95. Cook County prosecutors denied felony charges.

Vivek B. Patel, 21, of the 0-100 block of North Central Park Avenue in Lincolnwood, was arrested shortly before 10 p.m. on March 2 in a parking lot in the 800 block of Civic Center Drive and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony, after police found two pills of Aderall in his possession while stopping a suspicious vehicle in the Super H Mart parking lot. A small amount of cannabis was also found and both Patel and 21-year-old Niles man was also ticketed for it.

Bato Konovalov, 29, of the 10400 block of Dearlove Road, Glenview, was arrested at 12:39 a.m. on March 3 in a parking lot in the 9000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and charged with posession of a controlled substance after police found him in a suspicious vehicle in possession of two small bags of cocaine and a plastic straw used to inhale it.

Rafid B. Essa, 46, of the 7600 block of Harlem Avenue, Niles, was arrested at 11:34 a.m. on March 3 and charged with domestic battery at his home after an investigation determined he struck a person.

John M. Adams, 43, of the 8200 block of Wisner Street, Niles, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. on March 4 after police were called ot a home in the 8800 block of Prospect Street for a fight. Police learned that Adams had struck a person before police arrived and fled the scene, so they put out a description of him and his car. He was soon found and determined to be drunk driving, and he was later charged with domestic battery as well as disorderly conduct.

Kandace M. Bridge, 26, of the 4800 block of Elm Street, Skokie, was arrested at 7:03 p.m. on Feb. 26 and charged with aggravated battery after turning herself in at the Niles Police Department. She was allegedly involved in a fight with a patron at Here's Cheers days earlier in which she had slashed the face of another woman with a glass.

Steven R. South, 33, of the 6900 block of Niles Terrace, Niles, was arrested at 12:57 a.m. on March 6 and charged with domestic battery at his home. Police said he called 911 and said his brother was suicidal, but when they arrived they found his brother tied up with duct tape and beaten in the garage.

Jerome T. Graham, 32, of the 4200 block of Oakton Street, Skokie, was arrested at 12:05 p.m. on March 7 after he was allegedly seen stealing $147.53 worth of baby formula from the Walmart in the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue.

Jahid Saiyed, 42, of the 9400 block of Potter Road, Des Plaines, was arrested at 9:46 p.m. on March 7 in the 9600 block of Greenwood Avenue and charged with violation of an order of protection after he was found to be in the car with the petitioner on an active order of protection following a traffic stop.

Omar B. Awwad, 23, of the 8800 block of Dee Road, Des Plaines, was arrested at 7:28 p.m. on March 8 and charged with theft and speeding following a traffic stop in the 8500 block of Milwaukee Avenue in which he was pulled over with a defective windshield and speeding and found to be in possession of various prescription drugs after being fired from a drug company. Agents of the business told police he had been ordered to turn over the pills but he had not.

Michael J. Chomiak, 33, of the 9700 block of Bianco Terrace, Des Plaines, was arrested at 4:08 a.m. on March 10 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop in the 7600 block of Oakton Street.

Hiren J. Sheth, 62, of the 9200 block of Kenneth Avenue, Skokie, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. in the 6600 block of Dempster Street after a traffic stop for having a single working headlight and charged with driving under the influence and improper transportation of alcohol.

Trifilo J. Almajano, 48, of the 8200 block of North Waukegan Road, Niles, was arrested at 1:40 p.m. on March 11 at the Kohl's store in the 200 block of Golf Mill Center Road and charged with domestic battery. Police received a call that he was pushing a person aggressively against a vehicle in a parking lot. Witnesses told police Almajano and the victim left the scene and drove to a gas station in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue. Police arrived and located him and the victim, and other witnesses said he had been seen punching the victim in the face with a closed fist, causing a small amount of blood to be visible.

Joshua J. Hadary, 38, of the 8600 block of National Avenue, Niles, was arrested shortly before 6 p.m. on March 11 and charged with domestic battery and possession of a controlled substance after police were called to his house and found him with blood on his hand and suspected cocaine while investigating a call about a fight at his home.
