Shoplifter Snags Vacuum; Teen Found In Stolen Car: Niles Crimes
Niles Police Blotter: Feb. 13 - Feb. 21

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
INCIDENTS
CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 8900 block of Heathwood Court reported around 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 16 they looked out of their window to start their car remotely and noticed a man rummaging through it. As the vehicle started, the man ran away, taking a cell phone charger and about $300 in cash. Police are investigating.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 7800 block of Neva Avenue reported that sometime between 5:15 and 8:35 p.m. on Feb. 16 someone had broken into their home and burglarized it.
HOME BURGLARY (ATTEMPT)
A resident in the 6500 block of Riverview Drive reported that between 9 and 11 a.m. on Feb. 17 someone had tried to force their way into their home by ripping off window screens on several windows for a loss of $350.

FIRE
Firefighters were called to a home in the 8500 block of Oleander Avenue for a structure fire. Police said it was started when someone tried to install cable TV wires and did not properly wrap them, possibly damaging other wires behind a wall.
BURGLARY
A resident in the 8000 block of Ozanum Avenue reported that someone stole various tools from a garage during the overnight hours of Feb. 19-20. Police did not find any visible signs of forced entry.
THEFT
A resident in the 8000 block of Foster Lane came to the police station to report that someone had stolen various packages from their front porch between 7 and 8 p.m. on Feb. 8.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 8100 block of West Dempster Street reported that someone shattered the back windshield of her vehicle that had been parked on the street between 11 p.m. Feb. 20 and 10 a.m. Feb. 21.
RETAIL THEFT
Police were called to the Walmart in the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue for a retail theft taking place. A man reportedly took one vacuum cleaner valued at $269 and ran from the store.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Anthony M. Nugent, 42, of the 8100 block of North Merill Street, Niles, was arrested at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 at the Skokie Courthouse on an arrest warrant issued by Niles police after he allegedly took $612.45 worth of jewelry from the JC Penny at Golf Mill Mall.
A 21-year-old Des Plaines woman was arrested at 8:06 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the 9600 block of Golf Road and charged with driving with a suspended license, use of an electronic device while driving and ticketed for possession of a small amount of cannabis.
A 29-year-old Chicago man arrested at 11:07 p.m. on Feb. 15 and charged with driving on a suspended license after he was was pulled over for having tinted windows in the 6700 block of Milwaukee Avenue. He was also ticketed for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.
A 30-year-old Niles man was arrested at 12:49 a.m. on Feb. 16 and charged with driving without a license following a traffic stop in the 9600 block of Milwaukee Avenue for not having a working rear license plate light.
A 51-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 12:16 a.m. on Feb. 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop for not having the right type of registration plates on a commercial vehicle. He was also ticketed for not having insurance.
Payton J. Bauer, 19, of the 7100 block of North Melvina Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 12:46 a.m. on Feb. 18 and charged with criminal trespassing following an incident in the 8300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Police said they found him in a suspicious vehicle in a private parking lot in the 8500 block of Golf Road. The vehicle was found to have been reported stolen from Chicago, but Bauer said he had no knowledge it was stolen. A small amount of marijuana was also found in the car and the teen was issued citations for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.
A 22-year-old Palatine man was arrested at 12:46 a.m. on Feb. 18 in the 7200 block of Dempster Street and charged with driving on a revoked drivers license after he was pulled over for speeding. He was also ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.
A 35-year-old Evanston woman was arrested at 10 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the 7300 block of West Oakton Street and charged with driving without a valid license after she was pulled over for not properly displaying a registration sticker.
A 19-year-old Niles man was arrested at 3:22 a.m. on Feb. 20 and charged with driving without a valid driver's license following a traffic stop in the 9100 block of Golf Road for disregarding a traffic signal. He was also ticketed for a small amount of cannabis found in the vehicle.
A 44-year-old Morton Grove woman was arrested at 10:45 a.m. on Feb. 20 following a traffic crash in the 8300 block of Golf Road. While investigating police learned she was driving without a valid license.
A 37-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 10:50 a.m. on Feb. 21 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop in the 8200 block of Milwaukee Avenue for driving with an expired safety test sticker.
