Managers Battered; DUI, Drugs Charges For Driver: Niles Crimes

2 cars were stolen and 2 store managers were attacked in the Niles police blotter for Feb. 6 to Feb. 12.

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt from the 9800 block of Glendale Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 6, police were told.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone got into a car parked in a lot in the 6100 block of Howard Street shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 and took keys to other vehicles parked nearby, police were told.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2005 Dodge Caravan that had been left unlocked and running in the Home Depot parking lot between 12:06 and 12:26 p.m. on Feb. 8.

DISTURBANCE IN BANK
Police were called to the PNC bank in the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue at 4:43 p.m. on Feb. 8 and told a man had entered wearing a knit hat and sunglasses. During a transaction, he began acting irrationally and yelling expletives toward bank personnel after they asked him to remove his disguise. Police found a pocket knife on the man and also learned he suffered from various medical issues. He was asked not to come back to the bank, and staff at the bank declined to press charges.

GARAGE FIRE
Police were called to a home in the 7800 block of North Harlem Avenue at 2:17 p.m. on Feb. 10 to help the fire department. A detached garage was engulfed in flames, and the Niles Fire Department extinguished it. The cause and origin of the fire were not immediately known.

ATTEMPTED SINK THEFT
An employee of the Home Depot in the 900 block of Civic Center Road reported that some had tried to steal more than $1,100 worth of sink faucets between 10:30 and 11:05 a.m. on Feb. 12. When store staff stopped the suspect, he fled into a vehicle waiting for him in the lot.

BATTERY
Two customers at the Walgreen's in the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue attacked the manager shortly before 8:52 p.m. on Feb. 13, police were told. The manager told police the pair had come into the store intoxicated and began "swearing around other patrons." The manager confronted the pair, and the suspects responded by holding the manager up against the wall and beating him. He was reportedly punched five times and his lip was cut before his attackers ran away.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 35-year-old Wheeling man was arrested at 11:26 a.m. on Feb. 6 and charged with driving without a valid driver's license following a traffic stop in the 7400 block of West Oakton Street for using an electronic device while driving. He was also cited for not having proof of insurance.

Nicole S. Hansen, 28, of the 5200 block of West Byron Street, Chicago, was arrested at 1 p.m. on Feb. 6 following a traffic stop in the 8600 block of Dempster Street following a traffic stop for using an electronic device while driving. Police learnd she was driving on a suspended license and also had an active arrested warrant issued by the Harwood Heights Police Department.

A 20-year-old Niles man was arrested at 9:29 p.m. on Feb. 6 and charged with driving with a suspended driver's license following a traffic stop in the 8800 block of Milwaukee Avenue. He was also cited for possession of a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

A 22-year-old Chicago woman was arrested at 10:50 p.m. on Feb. 6 and charged with driving with a suspended driver's license following a traffic stop in the 7400 block of Milwaukee Avenue for speeding. She was also cited for failing to notify the state of an address change.

A 63-year-old Niles man was arrested at 4:03 p.m. on Feb. 8 and charged with driving with a revoked driver's license and excessive speeding following a traffic stop in the 7200 block of Lill Avenue.

Richard A. Crawford, 53, of the 900 block of Wilson Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 6:46 p.m. at the Fresh Farms store in the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue. Police were told he stole two bottles of alcohol from the store and was stopped by a manager as he left. Crawford then allegedly kneed the manager in the "groin area." Employees came to the manager's aid and Crawford was pinned to the floor until police showed up.

Rufus R. Dunkin, 45, of the 100 block of West Northshore Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 10:46 a.m. on Feb. 10 and accused of shoplifting $182.94 worth of household items from the Walmart in the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue.

A 51-year-old Des Plaines man was arrested at 9:06 p.m. on Feb. 10 and charged with driving without a valid driver's license following a traffic stop for improper lane usage in the 8200 block of Waukegan Road.

Kenrodia D. Giles, 28, of the 1300 block of Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, was arrested at 6:12 p.m. on Feb. 11 and charged with retail theft after allegedly admitting to stealing nearly $1,000 worth of electronic items from the Walmart in the 8500 block of Golf Road over a period of time.

Mark A. Wiley, Jr., 27, of the 1400 block of Cornell Court, Hoffman Estates, was arrested at 6:07 a.m. on Feb. 12 and charged with driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance after police got a call about a driver slumped over the wheel of a car stopped in the middle of the road in the 9600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Police showed up and found Wiley behind the wheel of the stopped car with his foot on the brake and the car in drive. He refused sobriety tests, according to police. After a searching his car, police found a clear plastic bag containing an 4.6 grams of cocaine, a scale, an open bottle of alcohol, and a glass pipe. Wiley was also cited for not having insurance, not carrying his driver's license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 52-year-old Niles woman was arrested at 9:33 a.m. on Feb. 12 and charged with driving on a suspended license following an investigation into a traffic crash near the intersection of Howard Street and Nordica Avenue.
