Morton Grove Police Department incidents and arrest blotter for July 2018.

MORTON GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Morton Grove Police Department as a record of police activity and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

SMASHED WINDOWS

  • Someone smashed the back window of a car parked in the 7900 block of Golf Road, police were told on July 3.
  • On July 4, a motorist was driving through an alley in the 8700 block of Georgiana Avenue when three to four young men or boys came out of a yard while yelling. Police were told one of them punched the back window the car and smashed the glass.
  • A resident of the 8400 block of Waukegan Road reported on July 8 that someone broke a window of a car.
  • A resident in the 5500 block of Main Street reported July 9 that someone had broken a window of their home, possibly with a BB gun.

DOOR DAMAGE
A resident in the 5600 block of Lyons Street reported on July 5 they were alerted by their car alarm and saw a vehicle drive away. The resident found the driver's side door of their car had been cracked open, with the rubber gasket detached from the rear door.

THEFT
Someone stole a speaker and an amplifier from the Morton Grove American Legion Civic Center at 6140 Dempster Street, police were told on July 5.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole a wallet and keys from an unlocked vehicle parked in the lot of the Menards at 6301 Oakton Street on July 9.

BURGLARY
Someone broke into a store in the 9200 block of Waukegan Road and stole "multiple items," police were told on July 9.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Keeney Street resident reported on July 10 that someone had made a fraudulent charge on their credit card.

VANDALISM
A resident in the 8700 block of Menard Avenue reported on July 11 that someone had painted graffiti on the property.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • A resident of the 9000 block of Major Avenue reported on July 13 that someone had gotten into an unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
  • A resident in the 8900 block of Parkside Avenue reported on July 13 that someone had stolen an I-Pass, GPS, keys and gift cards from a parked car.
  • A resident in the 5600 block of Lyons Street reported on July 14 that someone had rummaged through their car and stole a phone charger, a blood pressure sleeve, house keys and receipts from inside.

PACKAGE THEFT
A resident in the 8300 block of Callie Avenue reported on July 14 that someone had stolen a package containing an iPhone that had been delivered to the lobby of a building.

SHOPLIFTING
An employee of a store in the 7200 block of Dempster Street reported on July 17 that a woman had stolen two curling irons.

STOLEN CAR
A resident in the 9100 block of Mango Avenue reported on July 19 that someone had stolen a vehicle parked on the street overnight. The resident told police they noticed someone had stolen spare change and a spare key for the vehicle days earlier but had not made a report. Someone also reportedly tried to use a credit card that had been left in the car at an unspecified location.

ELECTRICITY SCAM
A reported on July 19 in the 5700 block of Dempster Street that someone claiming to be a ComEd employee had called then and threatened to cut the electricity to their home if the resident did not make a payment via the CVS MoneyGram service. Because the resident was unable to use the service, the purported power company man demanded $500 payment via prepaid gift cards. The resident provided the card number to a $249 card before realizing it was a scam and hanging up without giving the second one.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
An employee of a business in the 5600 block of Dempster Street reported on July 21 that someone had broken into the store and removed cash registers and drawers from the front counter. They were later found damaged on the floor, but it was not known how much, if any, money was taken at the time of the report.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A South Park Avenue resident reported on July 21 they received an alert about a suspicious charge after their driver's license and credit card went missing during the prior night.

VANDALISM
A resident in the 5800 block of Washington Street reported on July 25 that someone had spray painted graffiti in an alley on concrete in front of their garage.

VEHICULAR TRESPASSING
A resident in the 8600 block of School Street reported on July 26 that someone had rummaged through two vehicles that had been left unlocked.

JEWELRY THEFT
A Foster Street resident reported on July 28 that he met a woman at a Chicago bar before bringing her back to his house where they had "an additional alcoholic drink." He reported that he passed out and discovered some of his jewelry was stolen after waking up.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLE
A resident in the 8900 block of Harms Road reported on July 28 that someone had shattered the back window of a vehicle.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Ozanam Avenue resident reported on July 31 that they had gotten a bill for services rendered from Chicago emergency medical services. The resident suspected someone had used their personal information.

CAR BURGLARY
A 8500 block of Morton Avenue reported on Aug. 1 that someone rummaged through a parked car and stole about $2 in loose change.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Devonte D. Saunders, 21, of the 1500 block of 51st Street in Chicago, was arrested on June 28 at the TJ Maxx at 7250 Dempster St. and charged with retail theft for reportedly stealing multiple unspecified items.

Jamaal H. Carpenter, 22, of the 6200 block of Holabird Street in San Diego, California was arrested on July 7 in the 7100 block of Wilson Terrace and charged with possession of between 30 and 500 grams of cannabis, a misdemeanor, and delivery of between 30 and 100 grams of cannabis for delivery, a felony. Police were called for a report of a "suspicious occupied vehicle" and found Carpenter to have multiple bags of cannabis, a scale and a "large amount" of cash.

David Vargascoss, 35, of the 2000 block of North 17 Avenue in Melrose Park, was arrested on July 14 in Melrose Park after police there made contact with him and learned he had an active warrant issued by the Morton Grove Police Department for failure to appear in court in connection with an accusation of a hit-and-run traffic crash.

Cody S. Coleman, 18, of the 9300 block of Harlem Avenue in Morton Grove, was arrested on July 16 near the intersection of Beckwith Road and Belleforte Avenue and charged with mob action after he reportedly entered onto someone's property and "helped facilitate and was involved with" the theft of a camera worth more than $500.

Nukeya L. Hawkins, 21, of the 6300 block of South King Drive in Chicago, and Andrea M. Green, 22, of the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue in Chicago, were arrested on July 16 in Hanover Park in connection with an incident at a Morton Grove business. Hawkins was charged with felony deceptive practice and Green with misdemeanor deceptive practice after they went into Menards and bought items with a personal check from an account with insufficient funds. The duo then reportedly attempted to return it at another location for a refund.

Ki-Jana W. Humphreys, 23, of the 8900 block of Marmora Avenue in Morton Grove, was arrested on July 18 in the block of his residence for having an active arrest warrant for an unspecified offense.

Abraham Martinez, 21, of the 400 block of East End Avenue in Hillside, was arrested on July 19 near the intersection of Dempster and Ozark Streets and charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

Devon M. Johnson, 24, of the 100 block of West 157th Street in Harvey was arrested on July 23 and charged with possession of stolen property in connection with a burglary from a business in the 9200 block of Waukegan Road. He reportedly admitted taking the items to a shop in Chicago and pawning them.

Chandler P. Ottwell, 18, of the 5400 block of Reba Street in Morton Grove, was arrested on July 25 and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a child for letting a juvenile "known to be a runaway" stay at his home.

Octavio Garcia, 30, of the 800 block of Hollywood Avenue in Des Plaines, was arrested on July 25 and charged with fleeing and eluding police and speeding after fleeing a traffic stop near the intersection of Dempster Street and Birch Avenue.
