Niles West Debate Reaches Semifinals at Tournament

The debate season is underway and Niles West Debate is off to a great start!

Niles West Debate competed at the Wake Forest Early Bird tournament on September 6 through 8 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Niles West sent seven teams to compete in the Varsity division. Nicholas Charles and Rebecca Harbeck had a 5-1 record entering the elimination rounds and were the 10th seed. They lost in the Octafinals round. Soretti Donka and Faith Geraghty also had a record of 5-1 in the preliminaries. They were the ninth seed and advanced to the Double Octafinals round.

Out of 230 debaters, Faith Geraghty was awarded 13th speaker. Other West debaters who competed: Alex Brown, Lena Grossman, Justina Jude, Nina Saro, Mintra Omsin, Nitin Thomas, Julia Sarata, Walter Lindwall, James McClellan and Samantha Seo.

Forty-two teams competed in the Junior Varsity division, including two Niles West teams. Emily Silber and Rida Yousuf had a 4-2 record upon advancing to elimination rounds and finished as semifinalists in the division. Also competing from West were Henry Meinke and Siraj Patel.
