Nothing to Lose - Part II

Here is another true story about a salesman who had been calling on an account for a long time without any success.  Although the buyer frequently allowed the salesman into his office, he always was busy doing something and totally ignored the salesperson’s attempts to explain anything.  Nearing desperation, the salesman brainstormed with himself about an approach to get the buyer’s attention.

Visualizing the buyer’s office, he realized the floor was not carpeted.  Could he drop something on the floor which would make enough noise to get the buyer’s attention?  How about 25 things – his son’s marbles?  Of course, the buyer might get upset, but having no business he had nothing to lose.

He did it!!  He opened his briefcase and allowed his son’s marbles to fall out and bounce on the floor.  Apologizing profusely for his son’s negligence in leaving marbles in his briefcase, he got down on his hands and knees and began retrieving the marbles.  To his surprise, the buyer began helping as he asked how old the son was.   The buyer also had a young son, and as they talked, they developed a rapport which became a business relationship.

The moral of the story is, if you have nothing to lose, have fun and do something crazy.
