Niles Catholic School Opens Wildly Successful Open House to Kick Off Catholic Schools Week

St. John Brebeuf (SJB) in Niles was among the area Catholic schools which hosted an Open House on Jan. 25 to kick off Catholic Schools Week. SJB drew lots of attention from the public and the news media with its outdoor ice rink which opened that day.

Pastor, Father Michael Meany, center in the cap, led a group in prayer before blessing the ice rink. In the back row, is John Jekot of the SJB Holy Name Society Men’s Club that organized a Shoot the Puck contest and prepared a pancake breakfast for all who attended the Open House. On the right is Principal Elise Matson. They were joined by students, parents and visitors in the ceremonies covered by several news organizations including CBS-TV.

In the Name the Rink contest, students submitted suggestions which were judged by the Men’s Club and Pastor. SJB 4th grader, Dylan Durand, won the naming rights for the SJB Ice Rink with his entry “Heaven Skate”. For his efforts, he got bragging rights with his classmates and a $50 gift card to Kappy’s Restaurant in Niles.
