Teen Dead After Late-Night Crash Into Pole: Police

A 16-year-old Glenview boy died following a collision with a traffic signal pole Saturday in Morton Grove.

MORTON GROVE, IL — A teenager died after crashing into a pole in Morton Grove early Saturday morning, police said. Around 3:20 a.m. police got word of a one-car crash at the intersection of Dempster Street and Waukegan Road. Arriving police and fire personnel found two juveniles inside a blue Subaru sedan that had crashed into the base of a traffic light. The driver was seriously injured, and both were taken to the hospital by Morton Grove firefighters.

Jun S. Yang, the 16-year-old Glenview boy who had been behind the wheel, was pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge about an hour later. The passenger was treated and later released. Police have determined the car was headed west on Dempster headed toward Waukegan. The Major Crash Assistance team is conducting an investigation to figure out what factors may have contributed to the fatal crash.

Yang was a Maine East High School student who planned to study criminology and social justice and hoped to become a police officer, according to a GoFundMe page created to help his family with funeral costs. He was described as a caring, open-minded and approachable person. Flowers and candles were placed at the site of the crash in his memory.
