10 Cars Burgled; 'Several' Chainsaws Stolen: Northbrook Crimes

Northbrook Police Blotter: March 23 - March 29

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which merely represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Just because someone is arrested does not mean they are necessarily guilty of anything.

INCIDENTS

THEFT
A patron at the Starbucks in the 1000 block of Willow Road reported shortly before 11:30 a.m. on March 23 that someone had stolen an iPhone out of their jacket as it hung on the back of a chair.

IDENTITY THEFT
A resident in the 1700 block of Walters Avenue came into the station on the evening of March 23 and reported that two weeks ago someone had tried to open up an account using their personal information. The resident said they'd been told to contact a credit reporting agency about the issue, but instead learned it was a scam through an internet search. No information was given to the apparent scammer and a fraud alert was put on the resident's accounts.

FRAUD
A resident in the 2000 block of Glendale Avenue reported shortly after noon on March 25 that they had gotten a computer message claiming they had a computer virus and needed to call a number for repair. The resident told police they had called the number and remote access to their computer to an unidentified person on the phone. The resident also provided their bank account information. No charges were placed but the incident was reported to the bank in order to flag any suspicious transactions.

THEFT
An employee at the Northbrook Court Louis Vuitton store reported on the afternoon of March 25 that a unidentified person was seen taking a pair of Pilot sunglasses from the store without paying for them. No description of a suspect or reported loss was provided.

STOLEN CAR
A resident of the 2700 block of Oak Avenue reported at 4 a.m. on March 27 that someone had stolen their vehicle. It was later found by Skokie police. No further details were provided.

CAR BURGLARIES/TRESPASSING DISCOVERED MARCH 27

  • On March 27, Police found a vehicle that appeared to have been entered while unlocked in the 2700 block of Royal Lane while investigating another matter. The owner verified someone had gotten into the car and stole a multi-tool during the previous night.
  • Police found another vehicle that had been entered in the 2500 block of Illinois Road. According to the owner, $3 in coins were stolen.
  • Someone stole $21 in cash and coins from a car in the 2300 block of Illinois Road.
  • Nothing was reported taken from two vehicles parked in the 2100 block of Illinois Road, two in the 2300 block of Illinois Road and one in the 2600 block of Illinois Road.
  • Nothing was reported taken from a vehicle parked in the 2200 block of Catherine Street.
  • Nothing was reported missing from a vehicle parked in the 2400 block of Maple Avenue.

SCAM ATTEMPT
A resident in the 4000 block of Yorkshire Lane reported on the afternoon of March 27 that someone had called claiming to have been in an accident with one of their relatives. The caller suggested the relative was being "held" until payment was made. The resident verified the resident had not been kidnapped and did not pay any money to the caller.

THEFT
Two watches were reported missing on the afternoon of March 27 from a watch repair shop in the 800 block of Waukegan Road.

BURGLARY
Police were called to the 1900 block of Techny Road on the evening of March 29 by a burglar alarm. While checking the area, they found a glass door to a business had been smashed. No one was found inside, but the owner said several chainsaws appeared to be missing.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Staff at the Domino's in the 1000 block of Waukegan Road reported on the evening of March 29 that they had received about $250 worth of recent online orders that were found to have been paid for with fraudulent credit card information.

IDENTITY THEFT
A resident of the 3000 block of Antelope Springs Road reported on the evening of March 29 that someone had issued $1,500 worth of unauthorized checks from their bank account.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone broke into a car parked in a restaurant's lot in the 900 block of Willow Road between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on March 29 and stole a wallet. It was not immediately known if the car was locked.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 38-year-old Highwood man was arrested at 8:48 p.m. on March 23 and cahrged with driving while his license was revoked following a traffic stop near the intersection of Sanders and Dundee roads. Police noticed he only had one working tail light, pulled him over, learned his license had been revoked and wrote him up for both offenses.

Kenneth C. Decker, 46, of the 6400 block of South Champlain Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 8:33 p.m. on March 24 at the Sunset Foods in the 1100 block of Church Street. Staff told police two people were in the store who they recognized from past shoplifting incidents. They were seem putting bottles of alcohol into a basket and then leaving the store without paying for them. Police did not say how he was apprehended, whether the other person was detained at all or how much Decker is accused of stealing.

A 32-year-old Prospect Heights man was arrested shortly after 2 p.m. on March 27 near the intersection of Sanders Road and Picardy Drive and charged with driving while his license was suspended following a traffic stop. An officer on patrol noticed the man driving next to him and "knew this driver to have a suspended driver's license from a previous encounter." The man was pulled over, and it was confirmed his license was indeed suspended.

Aliya Raza, 28, of the 8500 block of North Drake Avenue, Skokie, was arrested at 11:39 p.m. on March 27 in the 3200 block of Dundee Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol. An officer noticed her sitting in a parked car with the engine running, "checked on" her and "observed signs of intoxication."
