Blue Island resident turns self in to face theft charge; Northbrook, Wheeling, Chicago men charged with DUI: Northbrook blotter, March 16–22

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

SCAMS

  • A Thornwood Lane resident reported on the evening of March 14 that they had wired money to someone offering an item for sale on an online auction but had never received any item or calls. The resident called police and is disputing the transaction on the website.
  • A Foxglove Drive resident reported around 11:30 a.m. on March 17 that they got a call from a person claiming to be calling from a health care company. When the caller answered questions incorrectly the resident decided it was a scam, ended the call and called up police.
  • A resident in the 800 block of Shermer Road reported around 4 p.m. on March 19 that someone had called them claiming to represent a large financial institution in Spain. The caller said the resident was entitled to a sum of money. Police informed the resident the call had been a scam.

ATTEMPTED BANK FRAUD
A Suger Pine Drive resident reported on the evening of March 20 that their bank had notified them that someone had tried to make several unauthorized withdrawals from an account.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Lilac Lane resident reported on the afternoon of March 17 that someone had put a hold on their mail and opened several credit cards using their identity.
  • A Scott Road resident reported on the afternoon of March 21 that someone had successfully opened several credit accounts using their identity.

ARRESTS

Bruno Pambuku, 22, of the 8500 block of West Winnemac Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 12:48 p.m. on March 15 and charged with retail theft from the Northbrook Court Neiman Marcus. Police were told he was seen hiding an unspecified amount clothes and walking out with them.

Gustavo A. Olvera-Vergara, 27, of the 1400 block of East Ports O Call Drive, Palatine, was arrested shortly before 10 p.m. on March 15 and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Greenview roads. An officer reported smelling the strong odor of burnt cannabis and a search turned up a bag containing a white powder and a single pill, as well as some marijuana. In addition to the felony drug charges, the driver was issued citations for possession of a small amount of cannabis and speeding.

Serge Manoshin, 49, of the 3000 block of Antelope Springs Road, Northbrook, was arrested at 11:54 p.m. on March 15 and charged with DUI and operating an uninsured motor vehicle following a traffic stop in the area of Patriot and Willow roads. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to dim lights. Police did not say how they determined he was driving under the influence of what he was charged with being under the influence of.

Juan C. Melgoza, 44, of the 1200 block of Union Court, Wheeling, was arrested at 12:07 a.m. on March 16 and charged with DUI following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee Road and Ash Lane. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Police did not say how they determined he was driving under the influence of what he was charged with being under the influence of.

Ioan Oros, 64, of the 5000 block of West Agitite Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 7 p.m. on March 16 and charged with DUI following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Princeton Lane. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and speeding.

A 36-year-old Prospect Heights man was arrested around 4 a.m. on March 18 and charged with driving without a valid license or insurance following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Pfingsten roads. He was also issued a speeding ticket.

Anayochi Uwazie, 42, of the 2500 block of Broadway Street, Blue Island, turned himself in to detectives on the evening of March 18 in the 1800 block of Lake Cook Road following an investigation into a reported theft that began earlier in the month. Uwazie was accused of making unauthorized withdrawals from unspecified accounts and prosecutors approved a single felony theft count. No further information was immediately available from police.

A 24-year-old Waukegan woman was arrested around 11 p.m. on March 18 and charged with driving with a suspended license and improper lighting following a traffic stop for an equipment violation in the 900 block of Skokie Boulevard.

Mohamed H. Benwahoud, 42, of the 5800 block of West Ainslie Street, Chicago, and Jorge F. Jimenez, 33, of the 400 block of Chatham Circle, Buffalo Grove, were arrested shortly after 4 p.m. on March 20 on outstanding warrants related to two counts of theft from a Jan. 16 incident in Gurnee after an officer noticed a vehicle with expired registration driving in the area of Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard. The officer pulled over the vehicle and arrested the driver, a 35-year-old Bensenville woman, on charged of driving with expired registration and a suspended license. Benwahoud was turned over to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Jimenez, who also had warrants related to charges of retail theft and traffic offenses in Chicago and retail theft, burglary and drug offenses following an arrest by Lombard police, was processed in DuPage County before being taken to the Lake County Jail, where he remained held in lieu of a $3,500 cash portion of his bond a week after his arrest.
