A joint project of the Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood, Social Action committee and Young Family Programming made an otherwise cold and blustery Sunday morning into something wonderful! Our drop-in social action event on Sunday, January 29th featured four projects to help fulfill the Jewish mitzvah of Tikkun Olam (Heal the World). Teams of adults and kids worked to create “Loveys” for the babies in neonatal intensive care at Northwestern Hospital. The colorful soft heart-shape lovey is worn against a parent’s skin and is then placed in the infant’s crib to help establish the parent-infant attachment through scent. Volunteers also recycled tee-shirts by converting them into shopping bags. The reusable bags will be given to local food pantries so that clients can carry home food and household items. Using donated travel-sized toiletries, our teams packed welcome bags for local homeless shelters that included soap, toothpaste, shampoo, nail files and lotion. We also spent time writing letters of thanks and appreciation to soldiers serving in the armed forces both in the US and in Israel. The program was co-chaired by Frannie Goldwin and Sandee Levin, both of Northbrook and Beth Sher of Deerfield.
