From cooking classes to sports for all ages, Northbrook Park District programs offer something for everyone

While summer is still in full swing, it’s also time for Northbrook Park District residents to start planning for fall fun.
Full of information for classes, programming and special events for all ages, the park district’s Autumn Guide is now available online at nbparks.org and in person at park district facilities.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. July 29 for residents and at 9 a.m. Aug. 5 for nonresidents.
Fall is also a great time for sports, especially for those who want to try something new. Young people can choose from baseball, basketball, fencing, taekwondo, skateboarding, tennis, volleyball and soccer. For adults, the park district offers pickup basketball, pickup soccer, softball, tennis and pickleball. There are also leagues for all ages.
Additionally, ice sports can be found year-round at the Northbrook Sports Center, which features two NHL-sized rinks, and golf is available year-round at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, which offers indoor technology to keep golf skills fresh during the colder months.
The renovated Northbrook Community Center, which reopened this summer, features a new teaching kitchen for cooking classes for all ages. The building also hosts classes and programming for everyone, from children to seniors, in visual arts, theater, crafts and much more.
The park district’s special events this fall include Northbrook Brewfest, an event for ages 21 and up held in conjunction with the Village of Northbrook at Village Green Park on Sept. 19, and Autumnfest, which is always extremely popular with families, on Oct. 3 at Meadowhill Park.
The second annual Fall Fishing Fest will take place on Oct. 11 at Wood Oaks Green Park. This is a great opportunity for children to enjoy a morning of fishing, with prizes for catching the biggest fish, smallest fish, most fish and more. All levels welcome, from beginner to expert.
Halloween fun includes the Halloween Pet Parade on Oct. 22, which is just as much fun for spectators as it is for participants, and the Halloween 3K Fun Run on Oct. 23, where runners never fail to wow with awesome costumes.
In November, residents of all ages can show off their basketball skills at the Turkey Shoot Free Throw Contest on November 20 for a chance to win a Thanksgiving bird.
As the winter holidays draw nearer, families are invited to decorate cookies at the park district’s new Chanukah event on December 6, enjoy a buffet breakfast and lunch with Santa on December 12, and take part in the Holiday Craft Fair on December 19 to wrap up all holiday shopping in one fell swoop.
