'Corporate Office' Scams Restaurant: Northbrook Police Blotter

A person claiming to be with the restaurant's corporate office asked an employee for $11,000, but settled on $650.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ignacio Magros Corona, of Wheeling, is accused of violating a median, improper lane usage, driving under the influence, DUI alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or more, no valid driver's license, and was arrested at 5:47 a.m. Jan. 27, at Dundee and Pfingsten roads. A court date of March 18 was assigned.

SUSPENDED REGISTRATION

Islammidin Turdiev, of Des Plaines, is accused of having a suspended registration, no valid driver's license, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 7:01 p.m. Jan. 28, in the 1900 block of Shermer Road. A court date of Feb. 15 was assigned.

A complainant reported at 11:05 a.m. Jan. 27, he had set up equipment to video record a sporting event and placed his backpack behind him while he worked in the 1300 block of Willow Road. Later, he noticed his backpack was missing, which contained two cell phones, a router and several back up batteries for his equipment.

FRAUD

A staff member of a restaurant in the 1900 block of Cherry Lane called police at 7:01 p.m. Jan. 29, to report receiving a phone call from a subject posing as someone from the corporate office. The subject said the restaurant was receiving a new cash register, but they had to pay $11,000 prior to receiving it. The staff member advised they couldn’t pay that amount, and the subject finally brought the price down to $650. The staff member used some of the store’s money and her own to provide the subject with the money through a Bitcoin transaction. It was later learned the subject was not with the corporate office, and he defrauded the restaurant of the money.
