Customer Attempts To Alter $1K Check To $42K: Northbrook P.D. Blotter
The woman had pulled up to a bank's drive-up lane and attempted to cash the forged check.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.
ARRESTS
DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
David E. Lehtman, of Buffalo Grove, is accused of improper passing on the left, violating a median on a divided highway, driving under the influence, open transportation of alcohol, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 7:11 p.m. Oct. 21, at Dundee Road and Western Avenue. Police said his car had struck the concrete divider that separated the sidewalk and Dundee Road. Police found the Jeep straddling the median barrier with all four tires off the ground. A court date of Nov. 27 was assigned.

An Echo Lane resident reported at 10:44 a.m. Oct. 20, he had received a phone call and the caller ID indicated it was a local bank. After speaking with the subject on the phone, the complainant provided his account information to him. Soon after the phone call was completed, the accounts had $3,900 withdrawn and his banking institution had no record of a phone call to him.
BURGLARY TO VEHICLE
A citizen reported at 11:32 a.m. Oct. 20, someone had entered her 2014 white Jeep and stole a pair of heeled shoes, a Bullova watch and a silver-colored necklace while it was parked in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road. The complainant was unsure if the vehicle was locked or not.
RETAIL THEFT
- The staff at a retail store in the 900 block of Willow Road reported at 5:53 p.m. Oct. 20, they saw three unknown subjects enter the store and walk over to the perfume bottles that were on display. The subjects concealed several bottles and walked out of the store without paying. The subjects were seen driving away in a dark-colored SUV.
- The staff at a sporting goods store in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard called police at 8:32 p.m. Oct. 21, to report two females walked into the store and grabbed several Nike and Carhartt sweatshirts. The subjects ran out of the store without paying. They got into a white colored Ford SUV and fled the area. Glenview Police Department advised the same subjects stole several pieces of clothing from their jurisdiction as well.
- The staff at a retail clothing store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road reported at noon on Oct. 21, someone grabbed two sweaters from the clothing rack and entered the changing room. The subject took the price tags off the sweaters, concealed them, and walked out of the store without paying.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY
- Residents in the 1200 block of Church Street and 1200 block of Ridge Road reported at 1:14 a.m. Oct. 21, several people had damaged their Halloween lawn decorations in separate incidents by cutting them with a sharp tool and throwing them into the street.
- A resident in the 1300 block of Wendy Drive called police on Oct. 23 to report someone had entered on to his property sometime around 1 a.m. and stole the Halloween decorations that were on display.
FORGERY
The staff at a local bank in the 2300 block of Waukegan Road reported at 12:19 p.m. Oct. 24, a female pulled up into a drive up lane and requested to cash a check. The teller could clearly see the check was altered from $1,000 to $42,000. The teller denied the transaction and called the Northbrook Police Department. Prior to the officer’s arrival, the subject fled the area in a white Toyota 4 door.
