Thief Uses Garage Opener Of Unlocked Car: Northbrook PD Blotter

The homeowners said the unlocked car was parked in the driveway and the thief used the garage opener to enter cars in the garage.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Breanna N. Hochstatter, of Bartlett, is accused of illegal possession of a controlled substance, had an active warrant out of DuPage County for the same charge, and was arrested at 8:42 a.m. Oct. 14, in the 3000 block of Dundee Road. Police said employees of a business noticed a woman, later identified as Hochstatter, slumped over the wheel of her car while parked in their parking lot. Police reportedly found several baggies with a white powder scattered across the interior of the car. They also found several baggies with a white powder insider her pants pocket. A court date of Oct. 16 was assigned for the Northbrook charge. Hochstatter was released to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office for the outstanding warrant.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Jose Carlos Figueroa, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is accused of improper lane usage, failure to use lights at night, driving under the influence of alcohol, open transportation of alcohol, and was arrested at 8:33 p.m. Oct. 14, at Dundee Road and Torrey Pines. A court date of Nov. 9 was assigned.

RETAIL THEFT

Raedonna Cobbins, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is accused of retail theft, and was arrested at 11:34 a.m. Oct. 17, in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road. Police said Cobbins attempted to steal a jacket valued at $870. A court date of Dec. 4 was assigned.

INCIDENTS

BURGLARY TO VEHICLE

  • A citizen reported at 10:06 a.m. Oct. 13, she had left her purse in her unlocked 2021 Volvo while it was parked on the street in the 1600 block of North Lane. When she came out to her vehicle five hours later, the purse was gone. Her banking institution advised her there had been some fraudulent charges on her stolen credit card.
  • The Northbrook Police Department responded to 11 burglary to motor vehicle incidents in subdivisions along Dundee Road and Waukegan Road. The incidents occurred overnight with unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway. Some of the items that were taken were gift cards and money.
  • A resident in the 1000 block of Waukegan Road reported that at some time in the early morning of October 15, someone went into her unlocked 2006 Chevrolet and stole two CDs.

THEFT/CREDIT CARD FRAUD

  • A customer at a gym in the 1100 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 2:12 p.m. Oct. 14, someone had broken into his locked gym locker at his fitness center while he exercised. The subject took his Visa and American Express credit cards from his wallet. The subject attempted to use the cards to make fraudulent purchases at an electronic store and clothing store in Northbrook, but both charges were denied. The subject did successfully make fraudulent purchases at a jewelry store in the amount of $35,090.
  • A citizen called police at 8:13 a.m. Oct. 16, to report someone stole several stainless steel appliances that were placed just outside a building in the 900 block of Willow Road that was scheduled to be torn down.

RESIDENTIAL/VEHICLE BURGLARY

A resident in the 1200 block of Eastwood Lane called police at 5:46 a.m. Oct. 15, to report she heard someone opening her garage door in the early morning hours. She also heard several voices inside the garage talking. The family contacted 911 and walked outside to see why the garage door was open. They noticed someone had opened their unlocked car that was parked in the driveway. The subject utilized the garage door opener to gain access to the vehicles inside the garage. It is unknown what has been stolen from the vehicles. The subjects fled prior to the officers’ arrival in a dark-colored sedan.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLES

Northbrook police responded to five separate reports of damaged vehicles in subdivisions along Waukegan Road. The damages occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 15. The complainants stated their vehicles either had their tires slashed or their vehicles’ paint scratched.

IDENTITY THEFT

A citizen reported at 10:35 a.m. Oct. 14, that someone had opened up a bank account in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard and received a debit card in her name. The complainant said she never authorized or had knowledge of the fraudulent act.

THEFT FROM AUTO

A citizen reported at 1 p.m. Oct. 18, she had parked her 2018 Subaru in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard while she shopped. When she returned to her vehicle, she noticed one of her license plates were missing.
