District 30 Board of Education Earns Governance Award

The Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 Board of Education was recognized for their exceptional governance practices by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). The award was announced during an IASB dinner this month.

District 30 was one of 80 Illinois school districts out of over 800 in the state to earn the School Board Governance Recognition, which honors the board for their effective governance and commitment toward obtaining the knowledge and skills to effectively lead the district.

IASB’s School Board Governance Recognition program acknowledges local boards of education that practice good governance behaviors as outlined by the association’s Foundational Principles of Effective Governance. Boards like District 30 that meet the necessary requirements are recognized for the two-year honorary distinction.

“The members of our Board of Education have given so much of their time, talents and effort to earn this honor,” District 30 Superintendent Dr. Emily K. Tammaru said. “We are lucky to have such a dedicated and cohesive board that always maintains a keen focus on serving as excellent and responsible representatives for all District 30 taxpayers. They always seek out new learning opportunities to advance their governance knowledge.”

The School Board Governance Recognition program aims to showcase how good governance creates a positive impact for students, staff, and the entire district community. It provides an opportunity for districts to tell their story about programs and projects that are improving outcomes in their local school districts and offers board members a chance to highlight how continuous learning, both by individual board members and the full board team, results in improved governance for the board of education and positive outcomes for the district.

“Our board always puts students first, and part of that includes continually improving our leadership skills and knowledge in order to support a well-rounded education,” Board President Jeff Zuercher said. “To ensure we succeed, we are committed to continual learning.”

“The work of the school board is not contained to our regular board meetings” Zuercher added. “A majority of our work actually happens on our own time: studying the issues, communicating with residents, advocating on behalf of District 30, and learning the intricacies of school finance, just to name a few. This work is well worth it to see our students achieve success and go on to do great things in their lives and our communities.”
