Fake Family Scams Nanny; Pedestrian Versus Vehicle: Blotter

Eggings, home burglary attempts and a felony DUI arrest on the Northbrook Police Blotter for June 1 to June 7.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which merely represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Just because someone gets arrested does not mean they will be found guilty of anything by a court of law.

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 1300 block of Edgewood Lane reported on the morning of June 1 that someone had gotten into two unlocked cars during the previous night, although nothing was reported stolen.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 2400 block of Colony Court reported that someone got into their unlocked vehicle between 10:45 on May 31 and 11:15 a.m. on June 1 and stole some money from the center console.

VANDALISM (EGGINGS)
A resident of the 1100 block of Blackthorne Lane reported shortly before midnight on June 1 that someone had thrown eggs at their home and car.

A resident in the 2000 block of Milton Avenue reported on the morning of June 2 that someone had thrown eggs at their car during the previous night.

THEFT
A resident in the 800 block of Pony Lane reported at 1:24 p.m. on June 2 that someone had opened up a packaged delivered to their home and stolen jewelry from inside.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
A resident in the 4500 block of Lindenwood Lane reported at 10:02 p.m. on June 2 that someone appeared to have tried to pried open their front door, but it did not appear that they had gotten inside.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Suzann Terrace resident reported at 10:22 a.m. on June 3 that someone had used their account to make several unauthorized charges and issue checks that had been written without their permission.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
A resident of the 0-100 block of The Court of Harbinger Falls reported finding pry marks on the front door frame on the morning of June 3. It did not appear someone had managed to break in.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A motorist reported at 8:22 p.m. on June 3 that as they were driving near the intersection of Sanders Road and Russett Lane when a pedestrian walked out into a crosswalk and began waving their arms. The driver stopped and the person began yelling, struck the hood of the car and broke the driver's side mirror off the car. Police did not provide a description of the person or any further information.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Skokie Boulevard resident reported at 3:14 p.m. on June 5 that they had gotten an email purportedly from Apple regarding an account to the company's online media store. The resident provided account and personal information before realizing it was not authentic and contacting the real Apple to change their information.

SHOPLIFTING
An employee at Clark Street Sports in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road reported at 10:43 p.m. on June 5 that they had seen a woman put a Chicago Cubs jersey into a bag and then walk out of the store without paying.

CAR BURGLARIES
Two residents of the 1100 block of Blackthorn Lane reported on June 6 that someone had gotten into unlocked cars during the previous night. A gas card and two bags containing clothing were reported missing.

A resident in the 1100 block of Briarwood Lane reported at 10:30 a.m. on June 6 that someone had gotten into their unlocked car but it was not known if anything was stolen.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Michelline Lane resident reported at 4:03 p.m. on June 6 that they had received an alert from their bank that someone had tried to cash a check on their account.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A staffer at the Domino's in the 1000 block of Waukegan Road reported at 12:11 p.m. on June 6 that someone had tried to use a fraudulent credit card to make an online purchase.

CHECK FRAUD
Someone scammed a prospective nanny with a fake check via a job posting on social media describing a family that had just moved to Northbrook, police were told on the afternoon of June 6. The purported "father" forwarded a check to the newly-"hired" nanny for groceries. After the check was deposited, the "father" then asked the nanny to go to Walmart and conduct a fund transfer of a portion of the funds. The nanny did this and learned that the initial check had been fraudulent.

CRAIGSLIST FRAUD
A Briarwood Lane resident reported buying an all-terrain vehicle off of Craiglist and paid for it with an eBay gift card. The ATV was supposed to be shipped but the resident did not receive it before filing a police report on the afternoon of June 6.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Denise Flores, 24, of the 4600 block of Lavergne Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 2:27 a.m. on June 2 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee and Lee roads. She was also cited for driving on the median.

Nina Kleiman, 62, of the 1000 block of Spring Hill Drive in Northbrook, was arrested at 3:20 p.m. on June 2 at the Saks Off 5th in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard and charged with retail theft. She reportedly was stopped by store security while trying to steal $600 in merchandise.

Charles H. Herndon, 32, of the 800 block of Woodbine Lane in Northbrook, was arrested at 4:04 p.m. on June 4 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above following a traffic stop in the 3300 block of Walters Avenue. Police were called to the area for a report of someone drinking alcohol and tossing the empty containers in a field. When cops arrived they found a car leaving the area, pulled it over and determined the driver, identified as Herdon, was impaired.

Isabella M. Hernandez, 19, of the 3000 block of Marshall Road in Highland Park, was arrested at 4:08 p.m. on an active arrest warrant issued by DuPage County connected to a charge of driving with a suspended license and no insurance while running a stop light in Elmhurst earlier this year. An officer on patrol noticed her car having trouble in the 1600 block of Lake Cook Road and soon learned of her warrant.

Giovani Flores-Hernandez, 22, of the 500 block of Green Bay Road in Highwood, was arrested at 12:10 a.m. on June 5 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Founders Road. Police noticed him commit a traffic violation, pulled him over and determined he was impaired. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, lack of a proper rear license plate light and not having insurance.

Iryna Grin, 42, of the 3000 block of Pheasant Creek Drive in Northbrook, was arrested at 12:36 a.m. on June 5 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop near the intersection of Landwehr and Dundee roads. She was also ticketed for improper lane usage and violating the median.

A 42-year-old Prospect Heights man was arrested at 2:10 a.m. on June 5 near the intersection of Sanders and Techny roads and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop. He was also ticketed for improper lane usage.

Geary Jacob, 34, 1200 block of Tyne Court in Wheeling, was arrested at 11:27 p.m. on June 5 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony, and driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license. He was also cited for improper lane usage, illegal transportation of alcohol and driving an uninsured vehicle following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee and Portwine roads.

A 34-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 9:37 p.m. on June 6 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Shermer Road.
