Fake Kidnap Call; Crash Leads To DUI Charge: Northbrook Blotter

FAKE KIDNAPPING SCAM
An employee at a Northbrook business told police they had received a telephone call at work purporting to be from someone who had just had an accident with one of their family member. The caller claimed to have kidnapped this family member and were hiding out with them somewhere. Then the caller demanded the employee wire transfer some money to Puerto Rico in exchange for their family member's release. The employee realized it was a scam and that no such accident had actually taken place, police were told.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Dillon J. Burke, 21, of the 1500 block of Kittyhawk Lane, was arrested at 10:04 a.m. on Feb. 9 after police showed up to a traffic crash near the intersection of Shermer and Waukegan roads. Cops said they determined Burke was drunk and charged him with driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol concentration above 0.08 and reckless driving. They also wrote him tickets for improper lane use, not having insurance and driving too fast for conditions.

A 40-year-old Carpentersville man was arrested 2:37 p.m. on Feb. 12 and charged with driving with a revoked license, no proof of insurance and unlawful use of electronic communication device after a traffic stop in the 800 block of Willow Road.
