Fans School Kanye West in Geography for Putting Chicago 'Pop-Up Store' in Northbrook

But online outrage over the location of the rapper's temporary weekend shop didn't stop the crowds of customers who came out Friday.

NORTHBROOK, IL — When Kanye West announced that one of his "pop-up stores" would be in Chicago this weekend, fans were naturally excited to have a brief chance to pick up merchandise connected with his The Life of Pablo album.

But some of that excitement faded when those same fans found out Chicago didn't mean downtown or any of the city's neighborhoods. In this case, Chicago meant the northwest suburbs. More specifically, it meant Northbrook Court mall in Northbrook.

As the realization set in that West set up a store to sell T-shirts and other items in an area that was more Kim Kardashian friendly than the rapper's old South Side stomping grounds, fans' faded excitement turned to social media outrage and snark:

There were a few people who were happy with Kanye's decision to locate his temporary weekend store in the 'burbs, instead of the hustling, bustling big city. And some defended picking Northbrook as a savvy business move:

Those defenders might have a point, considering the lines that formed at the store Friday afternoon.

The store will be open at the Northbrook Court mall, 2171 Northbrook Court, during the following weekend hours:

  • 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20
  • 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21
