Family counselor Robin Mitzen provides tips for improving your mental health.

“The day-to-day lives on the North Shore are more complicated than ever this year” says Robin Mitzen, a family counselor with over 30 years experience serving our community. With the holidays right around the corner, and even more on our plates to juggle, Robin advises individuals to check in on their mental health before unhealthy thoughts take over. “Conquering things early, before there is a crisis, is always the best way.”
Ask yourself, how are you truly feeling? It’s totally understandable if your answer is not great, anxious, apprehensive, not sure — you just have to commit to working through it. Over the years, Robin has helped countless members of our community navigate their mental health through powerfulful & meaningful therapy sessions in her Northbrook office.
According to Mitzen, “Recognizing behaviors that don’t serve you any longer is a key step that people should take into consideration when feeling overwhelmed. With the right tools the narrative can be changed if you are willing to work through it.”

Robin utilizes a technique known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to provide clients with effective tools to incorporate at home, outside of their in-person sessions. She teaches many approaches including setting boundaries within relationships; breaking negative thoughts; ending unhealthy behavioral patterns; tactics to postpone conversations before they may spin out of control; and much much more.
Known as “The Teen Whisperer of the North Shore” she continues to receive positive feedback from her clients. “No matter who comes into my office, how old they are, it’s not just an individual problem, it’s a family problem. Whether it’s a parent or a teen who needs support, when everyone involved is on the same page no matter what, that really helps the person become more clear and breakthrough.”

Mitzen meets with families, both adults and adolescents of all ages. “At every stage there are new family dynamics that can easily get the better of you. I work with families, together and individually, to give everyone involved a safe place to share and be heard.” She works tirelessly to deeply understand where her clients are coming from in order to get them where they need to go.
Robin began her career in public mental health, where she poured herself into various roles bringing dignity & worth to the lives of juveniles facing family crisis, drug addiction, child abuse, suicide and eating disorders. She helped these individuals overcome poor self-esteem, personal conduct problems, lack of motivation, anger, hurt, debilitating fear, anxiety and guilt.
More recently Robin’s work is focused on providing family counseling during divorce recovery, relationship building, parenting, blended families, helping parents understand their teens and teens understand their parents, addictions, grief, anxiety, depression, and intimacy.
One of her clients Julie S. says: “Ultimately, the work I did with Robin taught me a new level of self awareness and healed my depression. I use the tools learned to build a deeper, more connected relationship with my husband, be a more present parent, set healthy boundaries in many aspects of my life, and live confidently in the present moment.”
As a North Shore counselor for almost three decades, Mitzen opened a second office in Chicago during the pandemic, in the Lincoln Park area. When you work with her, she will clearly identify the issues that may be bringing you down, and will guide you on how to set boundaries in your life to create a healthy, gracious and strong foundation for your family. Her superpower is quickly getting to the point, and facilitating repair of complex situational issues affecting daily life. A joyful life is no accident, and Robin can give you the tools to create self respect for you and your family.
