Longtime Village Board Member Dies

Robert Jaeger, often the lone dissenting vote on issues, was an active volunteer.

Robert Jaeger, who served on the Northbrook Village Board for 20 years, passed away on December 20 at age 82. He leaves behind sons Matthew (Teri), Mark (Felicia), Robert (Kim) and Steven (Laura); and sister Margaret “Honey” Duffy (Ralph). He was married to his wife, Carolyn, who died in 2009.

The Nothbrook Star reports that when he left office in 2005, it was then the longest tenure on the village board in Northbrook history.

“Jaeger was often the only dissenting voice on the board on both major and minor issues,” according to the Star’s report. “He was the only member of the board to oppose Northbrook’s efforts in 1997 to seek quick-take condemnation power for the village’s downtown, an initiative that submerged the village in controversy, and led to a preservation-based downtown redevelopment approach.”

He was also the only proponent of keeping squad cars longer than two years, a concept that eventually was accepted by the rest of the board and one of the most active members of the Northbrook Civic Foundation.
