'Lottery Winner' Realizes Phone Call Scam: Northbrook Police Blotter
The complainant told police he realized the call was a scam when they started asking for his banking information.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.
ARRESTS
SUSPENDED/REVOKED DRIVER'S LICENSE
Emeril England, of Highland Park, is accused of speeding, improper passing, suspended driver's license, no valid registration, and was arrested at 1:45 p.m. Dec. 4, in the 900 block of Shermer Road. Police observed a silver Toyota Avalon driving at a high rate of speed. The officer measured the vehicle’s speed at 56 mph in a 30 mph zone. The vehicle also traveled over the double yellow lane divider while passing multiple vehicles. A court date of Dec. 28 was assigned.

NO DRIVER'S LICENSE
A Park City resident is accused of driving with no driver's license, and was cited at 7:04 p.m. Dec. 4, at Skokie and Lake Cook. Police saw the driver not using a turn signal while switching lanes prior to pulling them over. A court date of Dec. 20 was assigned.

- A witness called police at 4:40 a.m. Dec. 4, to report several people pulling on door handles of vehicles parked in driveways in the 1000 block of Waukegan Road. The witness said the subjects left the area in a silver Saab. The officers spotted the vehicle, but the vehicle refused to stop for the officers. The owners of the vehicles said items were moved around inside their vehicles, but it didn’t appear that anything was taken.
- A resident in the 800 block of Laurel Road reported at 4:54 p.m. Dec. 4, someone rummaged through her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the driveway overnight. She said nothing appeared to have been taken.
THEFT
A Foxglove Drive resident contacted police at 9:11 a.m. Dec. 4, to report someone contacted him saying he was from a computer repair firm. The subject convinced the complainant that he was recently overcharged with a computer repair and needed to be reimbursed. The complainant allowed the subject online access to his bank account to set up a reimbursement, but then unknowingly paid the subject $45,000. The complainant also mailed the subject $21,500 to a location in California.
FLEE AND ELUDE
Police saw a 2012 gray Nissan traveling at a high rate of speed at 1:32 a.m. Dec. 5, at Sanders and Dundee roads. The officer measured the vehicle’s speed at 70 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle fled. The Prospect Heights police said the same vehicle fled from their officer early that evening.
STOLEN VEHICLE
A resident in the 1900 block of Milton Avenue reported at 10 a.m. Dec. 6, someone stole her vehicle — a 2012 Lexus RX 350 — while it was parked overnight on the street in front of her house. The complainant said the vehicle was unlocked and the key fob was left inside.
RETAIL THEFT
- The security staff at a retail store in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard reported on Dec. 6 someone stole three iPhones in September without paying. The staff believed the same person has committed thefts throughout Illinois and Wisconsin in their retail stores.
- The store manager of a retail store in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 12:09 p.m. Dec. 7, a subject came in and walked straight to the Nike and North Face section. The subject grabbed several items and left the store without paying. The subject got into a white SUV and fled the area.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Grant Road resident called police at 2:29 p.m. Dec. 6, to report someone used his identity while they were being treated at a local hospital. Many charges were incurred and the complainant is working with the hospital to rectify the situation.
FRAUD
An Aspen Road resident reported at 3:36 p.m. Dec. 5, that they had received a telephone call from someone claiming he had won the lottery. The subject told the complainant that he needed to provide a $50 gift card for a processing fee. The complainant provided the gift card number to the subject over the phone. When the subject asked for his banking information, the complainant knew it was a scam.
