North Shore School Closure Update

Some in the region are open, others delayed, closed.

Open

Winnetka Public Schools District 36

The Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is anticipating they will be open on Thursday.However, “If weather conditions shift, or building conditions change, families and staff will be notified by email and phone early tomorrow morning, and an update will be posted on the website.”

Buildings will open on schedule and students should enter school immediately upon arrival. Afternoon bus riders will be kept inside until the buses arrive at the end of the day.

All outside activities will be canceled.

New Trier High School District 203

Dr. Linda Yonke, superintendent of New Trier District 203, sent a memo Wednesday indicating they will be open for a regular day of school. All classes, activities, and extracurricular events will go on as scheduled.

While the conditions on Thursday morning will be somewhat similar to Wednesday morning, she explained, the wind chill will not be as low and the temperatures are going to rise during the day.

“That being said, we all need to be well-prepared when traveling in this type of weather,” she said. “ In addition, teachers have been asked to be sensitive to students and families who may have difficulty getting to school on time.”

Delayed

Deerfield Public Schools District 109

All schools in District 109 will open on a two-hour delayed start. There will be no a.m. kindergarten.

“This means that the start times of our schools will be pushed back two hours (but dismissal times remain the same),” wrote Dr. Michael Lubelfeld, Superintendent of Schools

  • Deerfield Public Schools District 109. “If your child takes the bus, it will arrive at the regular bus stops in the morning two hours later than the listed time. In addition, there will be no before school care. There will be no before school activities of any kind either. After school events and activities will proceed as scheduled.”

Closed

Evanston/Skokie District 65

Due to a wind chill advisory remaining in effect through Thursday afternoon that will bring dangerous temperatures and strong winds, District 65 schools and centers will remain closed, according to the district’s Facebook page. However, all 12-month employees including custodial and maintenance staff should report to work.

Northbrook School District 28

All District 28 schools will be closed, communications coordinator Sara Kladis wrote in an email Wednesday. The KidCare program and all before and after school activities are also canceled due to “the forecast for continued extremely cold temperatures and wind chill factors in the morning.”

North Shore District 112

All schools will remain closed due to “continued dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill,” according to the district’s web site. “All after-school and evening activities are also canceled.”

Township High School District 113

Due to the “continued prediction of dangerously cold temperatures,” Township High School District 113 will be closed.

“This closure affects all District 113 students, even those who attend school at an alternative site such as the Tech Campus,” was posted to the district’s web site. “All before school activities are cancelled. However, as the temperature is predicted to warm-up in the mid-afternoon, after-school and evening activities will be held as scheduled. The HPHS Incoming 8th Grade Parent Meetings will also be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evening as scheduled.”
