Northbrook Fire Assists in Fatal Des Plaines Hazmat Situation

Fire department fills "vital " in response. Gas leak eliminated as possible cause of incident.

Hazmat technicians in Northbrook filled “vital roles” in the multi-agency response to a Hazmat situation that resulted in two fatalities in unincorporated Des Plaines Thursday afternoon.

Northbrook Fire Department officials filled the roles of Hazmat Branch Officer and Hazmat Safety Officer, while the Battalion Chief was assigned as the Staging Officer, according to a village press release.

“The initial suspected cause (a gas leak) was ultimately ruled out by Hazmat Entry Monitoring Teams,” according to the release. “The exact cause of the deaths is under investigation by the Cook County Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner.”

Northbrook Paid-On-Call personnel provided station coverage during the incident.
