Northbrook Students Rewarded for Research at Science Fair
'Independent Science Research' class helps 27 of its 43 participants win top prizes at local science fair, qualify for regionals

Students from Northbrook School District 28 were rewarded for a semester spent studying and researching topics of their choosing when more than half of participants from the Independent Science Research class were awarded gold awards at a science fair Saturday, Jan. 21. Each of the seventh- and eighth-grade students from the class came up with their own question to investigate and used the scientific method to research and complete 43 projects.
"They pick their topic and design their own experiment. They find the books and resources they think will help them understand their topic," said Mark Frye, one of three science teachers who mentor the students. He said it's a unique class "that pushes students to explore something they are truly interested in."
Two independent judges gave gold awards to 27 students, qualifying them for a regional science fair held in March, the Illinois Junior Academy of Science.
