Phony Grandson Scams $10,000 For 'Bond': Northbrook Crime Reports
Northbrook Police Blotter: Nov. 10 - Nov. 16

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and a list of those arrested. Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced and represent merely accusations by the state. An arrest does not mean a person is guilty, and all persons named are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

THEFT

A patron of the YMCA told police that someone stole a wallet – containing cash, credit cards and various forms of identification – from inside an unlocked gym locker in the 2700 block of Techny on Nov. 6 between 2:30 and 4 p.m.

Someone reportedly stole a newly-delivered UPS package from a front porch on the 2800 block of Fern Avenue on the afternoon of Nov. 11.
IDENTITY THEFT
On Nov. 14 at 6:39 a.m., a resident in the 2200 block of Founders Drive reported that an unknown person used their information to open a Comcast account without their permission.
CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A resident of the 1100 block of Shermer Road reported receiving a package that they had not ordered from a Chicago company on Nov. 10. An investigation determined their credit card was charged for the item without their permission, police said.
TRESPASS TO VEHICLE
A resident in the 4100 block of Picardy Drive told police that someone had rummaged through an unlocked car between Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. but nothing was reported stolen.
DECEPTIVE PRACTICE
A resident of the 2200 block of Washington Drive reported on the morning of Nov. 16 that someone had called purporting to be the resident's grandson, claiming to be under arrest and asking for $10,000 in gift cards to bond out of jail. The resident told police they went to Best Buy and bought cards in various amounts totaling the bond amount and sent it to the caller. Shortly after sending the funds, the resident realized that their grandson had not been arrested and it had been a scam.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Daniel Ioffe, 20, of the 600 block of Cherry Valley Road, Vernon Hills, was arrested Nov. 10 at 2:40 p.m. after staff at Neiman Marcus at Northbrook Court told police he concealed a Canada Goose aviator hat, worth $295 in his sweatpants and left the store without paying for it.
A 32-year-old Fair Lawn, New Jersey man was arrested Nov. 12 at 12:14 a.m. after police noticed him speeding, pulled him over near the intersection of Landwehr Road and Meadowview Drive and determined he was driving on a suspended license. He was also ticketed for speeding.
William Wesselink, 41, of the 2100 block of Woodlawn Road, was arrested on Nov. 12 at 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Shermer Road and charged with driving under the influence. An officer on routine patrol observed a vehicle commit a traffic offense, pulled him over and determined he was drunk and had a blood alcohol concentration above 0.08. He was also ticketed for using lanes improperly.
Anton Finoguine, 25, of the 200 block of North Elmhurt Road, Prospect Heights, was arrested on Nov. 12 at 7:43 p.m. and charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance and driving an uninsured vehicle. A patrolling officer noticed a vehicle commit a traffic attempt, pulled it over near the intersection of Dundee Road and Colonnade Drive and determined the driver was intoxicated. Finoguine was also ticketed for speeding.
Casey W. Dobczyk, 31, of the 100 block of Cross Street, Wheaton, was arrested Nov. 15 at 4:53 a.m. and charged with drugged driving and felony drug possession. Police said an officer on routine patrol witnessed a vehicle commit a traffic offense. Dobczyk's vehicle was pulled over in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard and he was determined to be intoxicated. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence of drugs. He was also ticketed for improper lane usage and failing to use his turn signal.
Zoia B. Zaharinova, 55, of the 0-100 block of Schiller Street, Chicago, was arrested Nov. 16 at 2:05 p.m. and charged with retail theft after security at the Neiman Marcus at Northbrook Court detained her and told police she tried to leave the story with $187 worth of items.
