Scammer Gets Hostile With Cops Over $18K: Northbrook Police Blotter

An elderly customer was attempting to withdraw the money in cash due to a "banking issue."

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

SUSPENDED REGISTRATION

Juan Rodas, of Chicago, is accused of having a suspended registration, no valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 12:15 a.m. Feb. 9, at Cypress Lane and Techny Road. A court date of March 5 was assigned.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Mwangala Nalukui, of Chicago, is accused of driving under the influence, speeding (63 mph in a 40 mph zone), and was arrested at 11:39 p.m. Feb. 10, at Dundee and Pfingsten roads. A court date of March 21 was assigned.

SUSPENDED/REVOKED DRIVER'S LICENSE

  • Jose Geronimo, of Chicago, is accused of improper lane usage, driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of cannabis in a vehicle, and was arrested at 9:10 p.m. Feb. 11, at Lake Cook and Waukegan roads. A court date of March 21 was assigned.
  • Demarcus S. Montgomery, of Zion, is accused of illegal window tinting, driving while license suspended, and was arrested at 8:27 a.m. Feb. 15, in the 1000 block of Skokie Boulevard. A court date of March 18 was assigned.

INCIDENTS

THEFT

  • A resident in the 2900 block of Floral Drive reported at 7:40 a.m. Feb. 9, she had ordered a cell phone and wanted it delivered to her house through a shipping agency. She was notified that the phone was delivered and signed for, even though no one was home at the time. She said she did not have any home surveillance system to show if it was delivered or not.
  • A resident in the 3000 block of Pheasant Creek Drive called police at 7:21 p.m. Feb. 12, to report they ordered gym shoes and household items online and had them delivered to the lobby of their apartment complex. When they walked to the lobby, the items were gone. The surveillance camera footage showed a female subject taking the items out of the lobby.

FRAUD

The employees of a bank were contacted at 1:03 p.m. Feb. 9, because an elderly customer was attempting to withdraw $18,000 in cash. They said an individual called her and told her she had to take the money out due to a banking issue, even though no one from that bank had called her. The officers called the subject back and the unknown subject became hostile on the phone and quickly hung up. It was at this point that the officers and the potential victim knew it was a scam.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY

A resident in the 1000 block of Midway Road reported at 9:11 p.m. Feb. 9, they had left their home at around 2 p.m. When they returned around 9 p.m., they noticed someone had broken into his home through a rear window and stole money and jewelry.

RETAIL THEFT

  • The loss prevention staff of a store in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road reported at 4 p.m. Feb. 11, a male had tried on two different jackets while a second subject acted as a lookout. The subjects then grabbed a Canada Goose jacket and left the store without paying for it.
  • The staff of a retail clothing store in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 3:26 p.m. Feb. 15, three subjects had entered the store and walked straight to the men’s clothing area. They picked up handfuls of designer coats and exited the store without paying. They fled the area in a grey Ford Escape.

TELEPHONE SCAM

A Russet Lane resident called police at 11:48 a.m. Feb. 12, to report they had received a phone call from a subject claiming to be with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon. The subject told the complainant that he had a warrant for his arrest due to unpaid fines. The subject told the complainant to send $5,000 to him to make the warrants go away. Since the complainant used to live there, he thought it might be true. The complainant withdrew the money from his bank, but decided to call the Northbrook Police Department for guidance. The telephone call was determined to be a scam.

BURGLARY TO VEHICLE

The owner of a company in the 1800 block of Holste Road reported at 6:20 p.m. Feb. 13, someone had smashed out the front window to their plow truck and stole the snow plow controller that was mounted inside.
