Shabonee Named One of the Top 5 Best Schools in Cook County: Magazine

Glenbrook North High School and Meadowbrook and Westmoor elementary schools also made Chicago magazine's list.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Four Northbrook schools were named to Chicago magazine's list of the best schools in Cook County, which was released this week.

The elementary schools that were ranked included Shabonee School at No. 4, followed by Meadowbrook and Westmoor elementary schools at Nos. 14 and 17, respectively. Glenbrook North High School was ranked No. 8 in its category.

In Cook County, Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park earned the No. 1 ranking among high schools, and Northfield's Middlefork Primary School took the stop spot in among elementaries.

Teaming up with nonprofit group RTI International, Chicago magazine created the criteria for its best of lists—divided by county and school level—based on test scores, attendance, spending per student, graduation rates (for the high schools) and other data taken from the Illinois Board of Education. The publication hasn't done this type of school analysis and ranking since 2012.

  • Spending per student: $13,144
  • Freshmen meeting or exceeding state standards: 79 percent
  • Graduation rate: 96 percent

Meadowbrook Elementary School (No. 14)

  • Spending per student: $13,182
  • Students meeting or exceeding state PARCC exam standards: 69 percent
  • Average daily attendance: 96 percent

Westmoor Elementary School (No. 17)

  • Spending per student: $13,182
  • Students meeting or exceeding state PARCC exam standards: 70 percent
  • Average daily attendance: 95 percent

Glenbrook North High School (No. 8)

  • Spending per student: $13,327
  • Students meeting or exceeding state PARCC exam standards: 96 percent
  • Average daily attendance: 97 percent
