NORTHBROOK, IL — Depth and heart can propel sports team to the highest of accolades. The Glenbrook North boys junior varsity ice hockey team had plenty of both and it showed with a season culminating in a state championship.

Coached by Jeffrey Marks, the Spartans posted a 56-4-1 regular season. Calling it the team's "triple crown," Marks and his team finished the regular scholastic season ranked No. 1, won the Scholastic League championship with an undefeated record, and continued the winning without a blemish in a perfect postseason en route to the state title.

"I'm very proud of the boys. Our season started in July 2021 and finished in March 2022 with a state championship," said Marks, who is assisted by Mike Silenzi. "Watching the boys grow within the system is so rewarding, and I’m so proud of each and every one of them."

"Winning the SHL Championship is near impossible, and winning state coupled with the SHL Championship is crazy," Marks said. "What a year."

This season, Avi Schoenberg was the leading scorer in the SHL. Michael Reyderman also had a huge season in goal for GBN.

Marks said the team rallied through COVID-19 and injuries during the memorable season.

"They had an absolute tremendous sense of team comradery, which is essential to any high performing sports team," Marks said. "They were accountable, had a fantastic work ethic and simply had a ton of fun. They functioned as a strong group — when one player was down, they rallied as a group to rise them up."
