Stolen Door Openers Used To Burglarized Garages: Blotter

Dog purchased with fraudulent payment, sleeping motorist charged with DUI on the Northbrook police blotter for Aug. 23 to Aug. 29.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • A witness in the 1200 block of Techny Road reported at 12:10 p.m. on Aug. 23 said someone broke into the front passenger window of a parked car and went inside. The owner of the car was contacted and reported various items had been stolen.
  • Someone got into another car parked at Techny Prairie on Aug. 23 and stole a purse with various items and cash inside.
  • An officer on patrol in the 3200 block of Sunset Trail around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 24 reported that a car door was left open, later learning two vehicles had been entered. A garage door opener and a pair of sunglasses were reported from one of them.
  • An officer noticed an abandoned bag in the road in the 2100 block of White Oak Circle shortly after 4:30 a.m. The officer found the owner and learned it had been stolen from an unlocked car.
  • A resident of the 2500 block of Kingston Drive reported at 6:17 a.m. that someone had gotten into two unlocked cars and stolen a garage door opener from one of them.
  • A resident in the 1900 block of Pfingsten Road reported at on Aug. 24 that someone had gotten into a parked car between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. but nothing was reported stolen.
  • A resident in the 3200 block of Sunset Trail reported around 10 a.m. on Aug. 24 that someone had gotten into three vehicles, stealing a garage door opener from one of them.
  • A resident of the 1900 block of Clover Road reported at 6:37 p.m. on Aug. 24 that someone had stolen a change purse from an unlocked car.
  • A resident of the 1800 block of Clover Road reported that between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Aug. 24, someone had gotten into an unlocked car and stolen a purse from the glove compartment.

THEFTS

  • An employee at a preschool in the 1100 block of Techny Road reported at 1:29 p.m. on Aug. 23 that someone had stolen a wallet from an unlocked office.
  • A resident in the 1000 block of Sunset Ridge Road reported at 7:56 p.m. on Aug. 23 that two rings had gone missing after cleaners had been in their home.
  • Someone stole a wallet and cellphone from inside someone's purse at Northbrook Court prior to 6:15 p.m. on Aug. 24.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • Shortly after 5 a.m. on Aug. 25, police found two abandoned bags in front of homes on the 2100 block of White Oak Circle. Police found the owner of the bags, who explained one of them, along with a garage opener, had been taken from a car parked in a driveway. The other bag was stolen from inside the home.
  • A resident of the 2500 block of Kingston Drive reported on Aug. 24 that someone had gotten into their garage and an unlocked car parked inside, stealing a toolbox that was later found in front of a neighbor's home.
  • A resident in the 3200 block of Sunset Trail reported at 3:33 a.m. on Aug. 24 that someone had rummaged through several cars in their driveway. The burglars stole a garage door opener, opened its door and rummaged through a car parked inside.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Pfingsten Road resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 27 that someone had opened an unauthorized account using their personal information.
  • A Woodbine Lane resident reported on the morning of Aug. 30 that a credit monitor agency had alerted them that someone had used their personal information to open up lines of credit.

DOG FRAUD
A resident in the 1100 block of Voltz Road reported on the night of Aug. 28 that they had sold a dog to an unidentified person. The seller was later notified that the buyer had made a fraudulent payment for the purchase.

SCAM ATTEMPT
A Cherry Lane resident reported on the morning of Aug. 29 that someone had called them up purporting to be from the Publishers Clearinghouse. The caller told the resident that the company would need a $1,100 cash payment in order to turn over a "winning prize." The resident went to the bank to withdraw the funds but was advised by staff that it sounded like a scam and decided against it.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Francisco Vidal-Rivera, 39, of the 8700 block of West Ballard Road in Des Plaines, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. on Aug. 27 near the intersection of Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. An officer noticed him asleep behind the wheel of a parked car with a flat tire, woke him up and smelled alcohol on him. Vidal-Rivera was determined to have been driving drunk, taken into custody and released after posting bond.

Hector R. Tomas, 33, of the 6500 block of South Kolin Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 8:14 p.m. on Aug. 27 on an outstanding arrest warrant from the Elmwood Park Police Department after police noticed him using a cellular device while driving and pulled him over in the area of Dundee and Shermer roads.

Marc E. Gilbrick, 52, of the 700 block of Joel Lane in Buffalo Grove, was arrested at 9:27 p.m. on Aug. 27 on active warrants issued from four different counties – Cook, Dupage, Kenosha and Lake – after he was pulled over for an unspecified traffic violation in the 3700 block of Dundee Road.

Angelo Caldarulo, 34, of the 7900 block of Westwood Drive in Elmwood Park, was arrested at the Northbrook Police Department and charged with two counts of retail theft after he turned himself in to officers investigating incidents of shoplifting at Marshall's and TJ Maxx at Village Square.

Vinh X. Nguyen, 47, of the 1000 block of Sanders Road in Northbrook, was arrested at 10:37 p.m. on Aug. 29 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Shermer Road. A motorist who reported an erratic and possibly intoxicated driver flagged down a Northbrook police officer, who pulled over the driver over and determined he was DUI. He was also issued a citation for driving without proof of insurance .
