Perfume Thefts Reported At Multiple Stores: Northbrook Police Blotter

The incidents occurred at stores on Willow and Lake Cook roads, according to police.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Peter O. Kelly, Jr., of Glenview, is accused of driving under the influence of drugs or intoxicating compounds, obstructing the roadway, and was arrested at 5:38 p.m. Oct. 10, in the 2200 block of Royal Ridge Drive. Police responded to a call of someone slumped over the wheel of their car while still in traffic. Kelly allegedly admitted to taking opiates and smoking crack cocaine before driving. A court date of Nov. 9 was assigned.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Kayjay Drive resident reported at 1:42 p.m. Oct. 6, someone opened two Verizon Wireless accounts in her name. The complainant did not know who the subject was and never gave permission to anyone to open the accounts.
  • A Steven Lane resident called police at 8:18 p.m. Oct. 9, to report he received an Illinois vehicle registration card and two license plates in the mail for a 2024 BMW he never ordered or received. The complainant contacted BMW, which put him in touch with the dealership that sold the vehicle. The California dealership said an individual ordered the BMW using the complainant’s name, but had it shipped to Romeoville. The Romeoville Police Department found the vehicle parked on the street and recovered the stolen auto.
  • A Trailwood Lane resident reported at 10:02 a.m. Oct. 10, someone accessed his American Airlines account, switched the email associated with it, and stole 34,000 miles from the account.

RETAIL THEFT

  • The staff at a cosmetic retail store in the 900 block of Willow Road called police at 6:42 p.m. Oct. 5, to report two unknown females walked into the store, grabbed several items of cosmetics and perfume, and concealed them into an orange shopping bag. The subjects walked out of the store without paying.
  • A male and female walked into a retail store in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road at 2:11 p.m. Oct. 9, with a store bag to return a pair of shoes. After the return, the female was seen on the surveillance camera walking up to a perfume counter, opening up the glass display and grabbing a high-end perfume bottle. The female concealed the perfume into the store bag and they both walked out of the store without paying.

BURGLARY TO VEHICLES

Three separate complainants reported at 3:33 p.m. Oct. 7, they parked their vehicles in a parking lot of a Northbrook Park District area of the 1100 block of Sanders Road. When they walked away from their vehicles, someone broke into their vehicles and stole their property from inside. They said the subject used some type of window punch tool to shatter the windows of the vehicles to gain access.

FLEEING AND ELUDING

Police saw a dark gray Acura sedan traveling at a high rate of speed at 2:23 a.m. Oct. 9, at Willow and Pfingsten roads. The officer measured the vehicle’s speed at 80 mph in a 45 mph zone. While the officer was catching up to the vehicle, the vehicle traveled through a red light while still traveling at a high speed. The officer activated his emergency lights, but the vehicle fled the area.

COMPUTER FRAUD

  • A Thornwood Lane resident reported at 1:32 p.m. Oct. 9, that her computer unexpectedly shut down. A message then appeared that advised her to call a support team via a telephone number. The complainant called and spoke to a subject that sounded like a male. He advised her to allow him remote access to her computer and to log into her banking institution. A few minutes later, a different subject called her claiming to be from her bank, indicating there had been fraud on her account in excess of $9,000. The subject advised her to go to the store while on the phone with him so she could purchase gift cards to remedy the situation. The complainant followed the instructions and purchased a retail store gift card for $2,000. She provided the subject with the gift card number. When the subject asked her to go back into the store to purchase more gift cards, the complainant became suspicious and hung up the phone.
  • A Lindenwood Lane resident called police at 3:48 p.m. Oct. 10, to report he thought he contacted Facebook to resolve an issue. The person that answered the phone advised the complainant that he needed all his personal information, social security number and credit card number to resolve the issue. After the complainant provided that information, the subject advised the complainant to purchase $200 in iTunes gift cards and provide him with that information as well. The complainant provided the card info, but then became suspicious when the subject asked for more gift cards.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

A resident in the 1700 block of Dundee Road reported at 1:12 p.m. Oct. 10, she heard banging coming from the side door to her residence. She could hear two voices on the other side of the door and felt someone was trying to break in. She yelled at the subjects and they ran away. The door showed evidence of damage from a pry tool.

THEFT

A complainant reported at 10:36 a.m. Oct. 11, that had checked out of his hotel room in the 1100 block of Willow Road and realized he left his gold diamond ring in the room. He called the hotel and the staff stated they found the ring and would hold on to it until he could return. The complainant came back three days later and the staff said they were mistaken and that they did not have the ring. The complainant wanted the ring reported as stolen.

BURGLARY

Police responded to an alarm at a jewelry store in the 300 block of Skokie Boulevard at 12:41 a.m. Oct. 12. Once they arrived, they found shattered glass from the door. They checked the interior, but the offender had fled prior to their arrival. After checking the inventory, they noticed 11 Shinola watches, valued at over $11,000, were stolen
