Update: Waukegan Road Borders Will Close By April

Borders released a list of stores to be shut down after the company filed bankruptcy Wednesday.

Borders announced that its store at many locations that will be closing after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday.

The 25,000-square-foot store in Deerfield is among 200 Borders Books, Music and Movies stores slated to close nationwide, according to a list released by the company Wednesday—roughly one-third of the chain’s 674 locations.

“In light of the environment of curtailed customer spending, our ongoing discussions with publishers and other vendor related parties, and the company’s lack of liquidity, Borders Group does not have the capital resources it needs to be a viable competitor and which are essential for it to move forward,” Borders Group President Mike Edwards said in a press release.

According to the release, the stores Borders has identified for closing are “a reflection of economic conditions, cost structures and viability of locations, among other factors, and not on the dedication and productivity of the workforce in these stores.”

Stores included in the list will be shut down by April 2011, according to Borders spokesman Jeremy Fielding.

Employees at the Deerfield store reached Wednesday morning said they were not aware the Waukegan Road location was closing, and referred questions to Borders headquarters.

“We’re not discussing communications that we may or may not have had with our teams,” Fielding said.

Other Borders locations closing in the area include stores , Mt. Prospect and , as well as several stores in Chicago. That includes the company’s flagship location on Michigan Avenue, which has already closed.

Fielding said there’s a chance the company may close more stores than were included on today’s list, but they have not yet been publicly identified.
