Jazz Showcase

Veteran saxophonist Tim Warfield—renowned for his annual holiday appearances in Chicago—brings his artistry to the iconic Jazz Showcase ahead of schedule. As a featured artist for the club’s longstanding Charlie Parker Month tradition, Warfield delivers his signature soulful tone and commanding improvisational mastery.
A luminary of post-bop and straight-ahead jazz, Warfield has shared the stage with many giants such as Dizzy Gillespie, Isaac Hayes, Jimmy Smith, and Shirley Scott, as well as alongside contemporaries like Christian McBride, Joey DeFrancesco, Nicholas Payton and Stefon Harris. His discography spans multiple Grammy-nominated projects as well as celebrated albums under his own name. Today, he shapes the next generation of artists as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Jazz Masters in Music program at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music, working under the leadership of Terell Stafford. 
The Tim Warfield Quartet will featuring pianist Richard Johnson, bassist Runere Brooks drummer Dana Hall (Thursday &amp; Fri) and drummer Dorian Phelps (Sat &amp; Sunday)

In August, Ghostlight Ensemble will present <a href="https://www.ghostlightensemble.com/happy-hour" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">the third installment of Happy Hour</a> — a staged reading series made up of short plays with one thing in common, they’re all set in bars. The setting for this event will be, naturally, a bar. So, join us as at My Buddy’s as we raise a glass to that oldest of human inspiration: spirits in a glass.
Happy Hour will feature a mix of writers from the greater Chicago area and across the Midwest, as well as other lands far beyond. Writers from around the world submitted more than 250 scripts for consideration.The event will take place at 7 p.m. at My Buddy’s (4416 North Clark St., Chicago, IL 60640). There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door, which will help fund our upcoming season. An estranged biracial couple must confront their feelings about race and bias after their son is detained by the local police following a traffic stop incident. 
The story unfolds over a single night as Kendra, an African American mother, desperately seeks answers about the whereabouts of her teenage son, Jamal, who has gone missing after an encounter with the police. As tensions escalate, Kendra is joined by her estranged white husband, Scott, and their clashing perspectives expose deep-seated issues of race, privilege and systemic bias.
Set in a Florida police station, American Son is a gripping tale of two parents caught in our national divide, with their worst fears hanging in the balance. This tense and emotionally charged drama is a compelling exploration of contemporary social issues.
