Red Theater Chicago presents 'insert heart here'

Red Theater Chicago will present a staged reading of its 2014-2015 Red Playwriting Competition winner "insert heart here" on March 8.

Red Theater Chicago will present a matinee showcase from its 2014-2015 Red Playwriting Competition, including the winning script insert heart here by Chicago playwright Erin Austin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at The Den Theatre.

Set in an illegal organ transplant clinic masquerading as a plastic surgery clinic at the end of an era, “insert heart here” examines what makes us worthy of love and what makes a person good or bad.

The staged reading of insert heart here is directed by Philip Max Lewis and stars Brenda Scott Wlazlo as Midge, Sarah Liken as Sunshine, Spenser Davis as The Person, Mark Huddle as Frank and Mickey O’Sullivan as Xavier.

Red Theater Chicago will also present selected scenes from each of the two runners-up: Reprise by Canadian playwright Mike Czuba, and Maybe You Die Happier by New York-based playwright Richard Manley.

Dealing with the death of his father amid the debris of his failing marriage, musician Steven Booker realizes for the first time he isn’t sure he likes the person he’s become. Reprise grapples with that moment when we meet ourselves for the first time and we’re forced to confront the uncomfortable truths about who we are.

The staged reading of select scenes from Reprise is directed by Maria Burnham and stars Mark Pracht as Steven, Erin Haddock as Joanne and Paul Tinsley as Peter.

In Maybe You Die Happier, a college professor, struggling to help two extremely gifted students with troubled pasts who are on very different paths in life, is faced with the reality of the philosophy he teaches — the universe doesn’t care any more for the lives and struggles of man than it does for that of an oyster’s.

The staged reading of select scenes from Maybe You Die Happier is directed by Emmi Hilger and stars Victoria Alvarez-Chacon as Anna and Dave Belden as Matthew.
