• DuPage County using freshwater mussels to help keep rivers and streams clean (cbsnews.com) — Salt Creek in Oak Brook is getting a quiet boost from thousands of freshwater mussels released just upstream of Graue Mill by DuPage County ecologists. The Forest Preserve District's decade-long program breeds mussels in a local lab, then "Johnny Appleseeds" them into area waterways to naturally filter pollution and strengthen struggling river ecosystems.
