BOOK REVIEW 'Everyday'

A novel with a character that being dynamic and changing throughout the pages to a new level...

Everyday

By: David Levithan

Ok, enough with the Beautiful Creatures series. I now take you to a novel that is anything but consistent in its characters.

The main character calls himself/herself A, not because that is his/her birth name, because he/she doesn't have a name, or parents, or even a body for that matter. Everyday this soul you may call it wakes up in a different body. Whether it is a boy or girl, straight or gay, cheerleader or outcast, depressed or lively, as soon as he goes to sleep in one body, he wakes up in the next.

A doesn't like to give himself a gender at all during the novel, because that is never constant. And, until one day, he didn't like to get too attached to a life, because it only makes leaving that much harder. Then he meets Rhiannon.

While in the body of high schooler, Justin, A meets Justin's girlfriend, Rhiannon, and breaks one of his rules of how to survive as a traveling soul, he gets attached. The rest of the novel is him trying to find a way to be with her, which is extremely difficult considering you're never the same person for more than 24 hours.

I think that is what I find most entertaining about the novel is all the different types of people A wakes up in each day. There are the populars, the geeks, drug smokers, a few gays, and so many more. It's a really entertaining mix and you never know what character you will get next. My personal favorite chapter is written from the point of view of someone who has depression. It's only a three or four page chapter, but the language is so genius and intense that I wanted to finish it as fast as I could because I could feel the uncomfortable tension in the air.

I also that he doesn't openly state 'this character is gay', or 'this character is straight', you have to keep reading into the chapter to find out for yourself. In truth, does it change the character what gender they are attracted to? You have to figure out for yourself as the pages pass, and I find that really cool that it's just completely natural and nothing changes about the writing. It may seem like a small thing to most, but I find it really awesome.

But, there is always the ending. Oh, the ending how many mixed feelings I have about you. There is a part of me that really loves the ending because it isn't some sappy 'the miracle of love' kind of ending. It truly is the only ending that made sense and stuck with the plot he already laid down previously in the novel. It stays true to facts and I appreciate that, but that doesn't mean I'm exactly happy with it either.
