Bremen HS Computer Science Students Learn Advanced Skills

Students engage in high level research and advanced Microsoft skills

Bremen High School freshmen are kicking their research skills into high gear this month in their Microcomputer Interdisciplinary Applications class. Students were learning how to utilize tables in Microsoft Word and were able to come up with a “top 20” list to show their newly learned skills. “Not only were they learning the advanced features of Microsoft Word, but they were also able to research something that interested them. Their topic was completely up to them. At several points of the project you could hear a pin drop in the room; they were completely engaged while they were reading and researching their topics,” said Business Technology teacher Mrs. Amber Guzak.

Several days into the project students were introduced to the fact that they were also utilizing research skills and were given a few more pointers on how to access information and make sure the sites they were using were reputable.

“It was really cool that we were able to learn research skills by looking up things that interested us. Now when I go to research for another class, I’ll know where to start and how to tell if a site is reputable,” said Freshmen Chris Clark.

After their research was complete, students then utilized their design skills to create a cover page. “The students really enjoyed being introduced to graphic design. I was able to give them a brief overview of graphic design as a career and then introduced symmetry, color variations and font styles. Over all this project was a complete success!” said Guzak.
