Churchill Orchard Donates to Bremen HS's Healthy Snack Initiative
BHS Interact Club sells the apples and donates funds to a local charity
Back by popular demand, Michigan’s Churchill Orchard donated fresh apples to Bremen High School students! This is the third year that Churchill has donated apples to Bremen students. Spanish Teacher Mrs. Gina Arguelles met Mike Churchill two years ago at the Tinley Park Farmers Market while she was shopping with her family. Arguelles started talking to Churchill about providing healthy snacks to her students and was asking about the varieties and prices of his apples. Churchill, owner of the family operated orchard in Coloma, Michigan, generously offered to donate fresh picked apples to Bremen High School. Churchill Orchards is about an hour and a half from Bremen High School, however, the distance did not stop Churchill from making a donation.
Mrs. Arguelles, along with Bremen’s service organization, Interact Club, sold the apples to students for twenty-five cents each and then in turn will donate the money raised to a local charity. After receiving a bushel of apples on Saturday and opening sales on Monday, the apples were sold-out by Tuesday morning! “Students look forward to the apples now! They thank me for the apples and look forward to the fresh variety,” said Arguelles, “given the option to buy healthy treats or chips and candy, most students will choose the healthy snack. Students are coming up with ways to assist in the sales and are as excited as I am. I am so thankful for Mr. Churchill and his generous donations to the students!”
