Driver Killed After Truck Hit Viaduct in Oak Forest

Oak Forest police have identified the victim of Monday's crash on Cicero as a 57-year-old man from Northwest Indiana.

OAK FOREST, IL -- The driver of the truck that crashed into the viaduct at 157th and Cicero in Oak Forest Monday afternoon died as a result of the accident. Oak Forest Police Chief Tim Kristin confirmed the fatality Tuesday morning and identified the victim as Joseph C. Heldt, a 57-year-old man from Dyer, Indiana.

Heldt died of multiple blunt force injuries due to motor vehicle collision, ccording to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The manner of death has been ruled an accident.

Kristin said the vehicle struck the bridge on Cicero around 3:30 p.m., causing the truck to overturn. The accident caused Cicero Avenue to close for hours between 155th Street and 159th Street.

Trains on the Metra Rock Island line were also delayed as the truck struck the bridge that holds a portion of the rail line.

It was a single-vehicle accident and no other injuries were reported.

The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
