The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (LCR) observes the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (ELCA) – 15050 S. Central Ave, Oak Forest, IL 60452 will observe the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation with a yearlong celebration beginning October 30th, 2016 with ONE service at 10a and a German potluck picnic with the viewing of the movie “Luther” following the service.

The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Churches in the Lutheran tradition regard October 31st, 1517 as the starting point of the Reformation. It was on that date that Martin Luther is said to have nailed his ninety-five theses opposing the sale of indulgences and what he perceived to be clerical abuses attached to this practice on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg.

The shaking of the foundations that reverberated 500 years ago from Wittenberg, Zürich, Geneva and many other places changed the fabric of social relations in Europe. This movement radiated out to other continents, influencing whole cultures and regions.

Part of our yearlong celebration is our Wellness Walk To Wittenberg (WW2W) which will be a church wide event aimed at revisiting the Lutheran heritage, the Lutheran theology and the teachings of Luther via a virtual walk to Wittenberg, Germany. We begin this journey on Sunday, October 30^thon the 499^th anniversary of the Reformation. We will record our steps each week and move Martin Luther across the USA and into Germany, based on the number of miles traveled each month. The total number of miles to Wittenberg, Germany is 4463.

Participants in this walk are asked to find sponsors for each mile walked to raise money (e.g. 0.10 ₵, 0.25 ₵ or 0.50 ₵ per mile). All donations will go to the ELCA World Hunger Challenge.
