Oak Forest, IL Local Awarded 2016 Cato T. Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D., Travel Fellowship

Robert De Loera, a recent graduate from the University of Chicago, was one of three students who were awarded the 2016 Travel Fellowship.

Robert De Loera, a recent graduate of the University of Chicago with a degree in Biological Sciences and a specialization in immunology, was recently awarded the first Cato T. Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D., Travel Fellowship.

Named in honor of a distinguished member of the Society For Biomaterials, the Travel Fellowship was created to promote diversity, inclusion and success within STEM fields. The Fellowship provides undergraduate students with the resources needed to become a member of the Society For Biomaterials and attend the annual meeting. Fellows are paired with a mentor to serve as a guide as well as to advise them in pursuing advanced degrees and their career goals.

An Oak Forest native, De Loera is interested in biotech startup companies and is currently working at BioMotiv, a Cleveland-based biotech accelerator company.

As an undergraduate, De Loera worked at the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, where he focused on inducing systemic immunological tolerance by exploiting the tolerogenic nature of red blood cell clearance. De Loera plans to attend graduate school to earn his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees.
