17-Year-Old In Viral Arrest Video Faces Gun, Resisting Charges

OAK LAWN, IL — The teen whose arrest was captured on a citizen’s video last week after police say he fled a traffic stop and was found to be carrying a gun has been charged.

Hadi Abuadaleh, 17, was released Monday from Advocate Christ Medical Center and transported to the Oak Lawn police station. Abuadaleh was charged as a juvenile with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and revisiting arrest, both felonies. The teen also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possession of cannabis by a passenger in a motor vehicle.

The teen’s arrest on July 27 became the center of controversy when a citizen’s video captured two Oak Lawn police officers repeatedly punching Abuadaleh while he was lying face down on the ground. A third officer joined the other officers and tased the teen, as shown on police dash cam video.

Oak Lawn police maintain that the teen was not complying with the orders and would not give up an accessory bag that continued a .25-caliber gun. Arab American community members staged a protest last week in front of village hall demanding an end to racial profiling.

The teen has been taken to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center at 1100 S. Hamilton for a detention hearing.

Oak Lawn police are cooperating with the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force investigation that has been requested by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
