68 Students Inducted into NJHS at OLHMS Annual Ceremony

New members celebrated for their scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School.

On Thursday, May 18, Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123's middle school (OLHMS) held its annual National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony. The event, rich in tradition, was marked by the induction of 68 new NJHS members.

Founded in 1929, the NJHS is a renowned organization guided by five pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These tenets were highlighted during the ceremony, with students representing each pillar by lighting a symbolic candle.

The induction began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by student Maggie Bertalmio. The audience was welcomed by NJHS President Spencer McCarthy, followed by remarks from Dr. Paul Enderle, Superintendent of District 123, Mr. Brian Nicholas, President of the Board of Education, Mrs. Naser-Hammad of the PTSA, and Dr. Sean McNichols.

One of the inductees, Quinn, shared his personal experiences with the NJHS, highlighting the organization's role in his personal growth.

"NJHS has been a great opportunity to better myself as a person," Quinn said. "It has taught me how to be a good leader, to put helping others over helping myself, and it has taught me to put the greater good as a whole above myself."

The new NJHS members recited the Group Pledge and were officially sworn in by Dr. McNichols. These students were recognized for their dedication, leadership, and exemplary conduct in and outside the classroom.

The successful event was credited to the efforts of NJHS Advisors Mrs. Ksiazek, Mrs. Owens, and Mrs. Omiecinski, who worked tirelessly throughout the year to organize the ceremony.
