85-Year-Old Oak Lawn Man Scammed Out of Almost $3K

Woman claimed to be the man's daughter-in-law and said she needed money after being arrested on drug charges in Mexico.

An 85-year-old Oak Lawn man was bilked out of almost $3,000 in April after a woman claiming to be his daughter-in-law called asking for money because she was in trouble with Mexican authorities, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

The man wired a total of $2,800 over three days at the end of April to the address of what he was told was the Mexico City lawyer representing his daughter-in-law, the report stated. The woman claiming to be his daughter-in-law said she was in Mexico for a funeral but was arrested on marijuana charges, the report added.

The Oak Lawn man found out he had been scammed after calling his son, who told him his daughter-in-law was still in Chicago, the report stated.
