Accused Oak Lawn Carjacker Nabbed Wearing Ankle Bracelet
Chicago man was wearing an ankle bracelet when he was arrested and had just been released on parole, prosecutors said.

OAK LAWN, IL -- A Chicago man was arrested the day after he allegedly carjacked a woman’s vehicle from a business parking lot in Oak Lawn. Dwayne Corley, 25, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice wearing blue hospital scrubs on felony charges of unlawful vehicular invasion and robbery. Corley is currently on parole and was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet at the time of his arrest, prosecutors said.
The carjacking happened on Wednesday around 12:44 p.m. in the 9500 block of South Merrimac Avenue. An employee of a business entered her vehicle and had not yet had the chance to lock her doors. Corley allegedly opened the door to her 2017 Hyundai Velostar and ordered her to lie down on the ground. She complied with his demands and Corley took off in her vehicle, the prosecutor said. The woman went back to her place of business where her boss called police. (SUBSCRIBE: Get Real-Time Alerts and a Daily Newsletter for Oak Lawn)
Later that evening, Oak Lawn detectives ran the vehicle’s plate number tracing it to the Langley address in Chicago. Police staked out the address where they spotted Corley exiting the stolen vehicle, the prosecutor said. Corley allegedly had the vehicle’s keys in his hand when police took him into custody without incident.

Detectives also recovered a cell phone and the clothes that Corley was wearing during the carjacking, consisting of green sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, the prosecutor said. Corley allegedly told officers that he found the vehicle unlocked and was “just sitting in the car.”

Video from the area showed a man matching the physical and clothing description given by the woman, but surveillance video did not show the vehicle being stolen. The woman was unable to identify Corley in a photo array “because the incident happened so fast,” the prosecutor said.
Corley was released from the Shawnee Correctional Center on Oct. 4, where he had been serving concurrent six-year sentences stemming from a 2015 conviction for unlawful vehicular invasion and vehicular hijacking. Corley was reportedly wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and was allowed to be away from home between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the time when the robbery occurred. He was also convicted in 2013 of vehicular hijacking, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The assistant public defender told the judge that Corley completed up to the tenth grade in high school. Corley is also on SSI. The attorney said that Oak Lawn police had taken away Corley’s clothes when he was arrested to be entered as evidence.
The Oak Lawn incident is not believed to be tied to Thursday's carjacking and subsequent chase in Orland Park and Oak Forest, where a construction worker and Oak Forest police officer were injured.
Bail was set at $150,000. Corley was also placed on a parole hold. Corley’s next court date is Nov. 8 in Bridgeview.
