An arrow was shot through the glass door of Oak Lawn Mayor Sandra Bury’s optometry practice early Monday morning.

Oak Lawn police said that a newspaper delivery driver was dropping off newspapers around 4:45 a.m. at Bury’s optometry office, Complete Vision Care, 6209 W. 95th St., when he noticed broken glass in one of the doors. The newspaper delivery driver said he didn’t see anyone in the area and immediately called police.

Police proceeded to the rear of the building where they found shards of glass on the ground, as well as broken glass in the door. Officers located what appeared to be an arrow sticking in a chair directly across from where the glass door had been shattered.

The mayor said she was awakened by Oak Lawn police around 5:15 a.m. and went to her office. She said nothing appeared to be missing or damaged. A board up service was notified and arrived at 6:17 a.m. to board up the broken glass door.

The mayor posted on her Facebook page that the arrow penetrated through two panes of glass where it went across the room, through one of the chairs in the practice’s waiting room, dinging the chair behind it.

Directly behind the chair was a children’s play area with a rocking horse.

“Were they aiming for the rocking horse? We’ll never know,” she quipped.

No one was injured and the practice was closed when the incident occurred. The mayor is a practicing optometrist.

Village Manager Larry Deetjen called the crime “despicable.”

“You wonder what’s wrong with folks that engage in that type of activity,” Deetjen said. “Oak Lawn police are investigating it like they would any other crime.”

Bury was not immediately available for comment.
