Celebrate Free Comic Book Day in Oak Lawn

As all the cool nerds know, national Free Comic Book Day will take place May 2 this year, and comic book stores and libraries around the country are preparing to give away thousand of comics.

The Oak Lawn Public Library, in partnership with Chimera’s Comics, has organized the first annual FanFest to coincide with this year’s Free Comic Book Day.

The OLPL Fan Fest: Year One will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2 at the Oak Lawn Public Library. It’ll be a celebration of pop culture and comic book fandom.

“FanFest is going to be a great event,” said Chimera‘s Comics co-owner Carmelo Chimera. “The OLPL has planned panelists, exhibitors, and entertainment. We’re proud to partner with them on this event and provide free comic books.”

Chimera’s Comics expects to hand out 2,000 comics through its stores in Oak Lawn, La Grange, at a new location in Woodridge and at partnering businesses and libraries.

Fans will be able to choose from more than 50 different titles, including ”Avengers,” ”Doctor Who,” and ”Spongebob Squarepants.”

The business has also partnered with the La Grange Public Library, La Grange Park Public Library, Brookfield Public Library, Thomas Ford Memorial Library and Hinsdale Public Library, which will also pass out free comics May 2.

“I love this holiday because the selection of books shows that there’s something for everyone - boys and girls, young and old,” said Chimera’s Comics co-owner Steven Brown. “It really bring the community together.”

Other participating locations around the Chicago area include:

  • Top Cut Comics, 6390 S Archer Ave., Chicago
  • Comic Collector, 3246 Harlem Ave., Riverside
  • Hellfire Comics, 240 Chicago Ridge Mall, Chicago Ridge
  • Defiant Comics, 7234 Madison St., Forest Park
