Celebrate Women's History Month In March At The Oak Lawn Library

OAK LAWN, IL – Celebrate Women’s History Month at the Oak Lawn Public Library, 9427 S. Raymond Ave. The library has a whole month of programs planned for all ages recognizing the lives of women throughout the month of March. All programs are free.

On Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m., Tauya Forst, professor of justice studies at the College of DuPage, discusses the only six women ever appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson have diverse views that appeal to the public across the political spectrum. “Each Lady Justice is unique and has left her own mark on the bench,” Professor Forst says.

Youth Services will present “Let’s Find Out: Women’s History Month” for families on Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. Families will read stories celebrating the many contributions that women have made throughout history to culture and society. Afterward, participants will create cards to give to those who inspire them. The library will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of this program.

On Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m., the Friends of the Library will present a free concert featuring singer Renee Hein. The concert, titled “Legendary Ladies of Song,” pays tribute to unforgettable female musicians like Doris Day, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Connie Francis, Etta James, Natalie Cole, Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand.

Award-winning mystery author Mia Manansala will discuss her 2021 debut novel, “Arsenic and Adobo” on Wednesday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. This talented author will read from her books and share the writing process behind her cozy “Tita Rosie’s Kitchen Mystery” series.

On Monday, March 27 at 1:30 p.m., Oak Lawn Friend of the Library Celeste Brown presents “A Woman on an Adventure.” Brown will describe a recent trip with Road Scholar—a specialty tour company for seniors—that took her on a tour to Greece, Egypt, Israel and Turkey. This adventure helped Brown make friends and discover a new side of herself.

Throughout the month of March, patrons may contribute photographs or written descriptions of remarkable women to be displayed at the Adult Services Desk as a special pop-up program. Recognize a woman of international renown or one dear to your heart. Receive a trinket for participating, while supplies last.

From female judges to musicians, mystery writers to senior adventurers, Oak Lawn Public Library’s free Women’s History Month programs highlight the diversity of women’s experiences.
