Gimme 5: New Richards Boys Soccer Coach Already Feels At Home in Oak Lawn

First-year Bulldogs coach Dan Scanlan reflects on why he's a coach and how his team is coming along as the season approaches.

Dan Scanlan, first-year head coach of Richards High School’s boys soccer team, has been playing soccer since he was 5 years old. A product of the Lincoln-Way High School system, Scanlan played at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

Scanlan appreciated the positive influence his various coaches had on him, and he knew coming out of Carthage that he wanted to coach as well.

“I’ve had a lot of really good coaches in my career that have really impacted me as a person and as a player,” Scanlan said. “And I’m a teacher. I’m all about teaching and helping people develop to become more ready for life after high school.”

From the way Scanlan talks about the Richards community, it sounds like he was born to coach at the high school in Oak Lawn.

“I love the diversity and the community itself,” he said. “There’s a reason why people that live in Oak Lawn stay in Oak Lawn. There aren’t a lot of people that move out of this area because it’s a great area to be in.
